A mint in these trying times, perhaps? 🍬
Luna, a blue roan mare who looks black in her winter coat, reaches forward with her nose and mouth to examine the spearmint I have in my hand. She has an inquisitive, goofy look on her face with ears forward. Our donkey is barely visible in the background to the left of the picture.

Little blue filly coming into some work (slowly)! She just had some misc tasks today with no real goal, but she did well with that!
Luna, a blue roan mare, being taken at a walk on the line. She is completely visible and moving clockwise. She doesn’t look terribly thrilled, but not terribly bothered either. Her croup is really starting to roan out but her neck, not so much. She wears a gray pad with a standard looking roping saddle that has a light tan pommel.

A photo of Strawberry, mostly her head, but she is walking towards me so a leg is visible, wearing a pink fly mask that has a nose cover. Strawberry is a young, graying red base made. She has a pretty wide blaze that goes all the way down her nose, thus the need for a nose cover fly mask. Her ears are up as she looks at me holding up the phone.Picture of Flame, a chestnut arabian, though it is hard to see the dishy snout with this fly mask on, wears a mask of the same brand to also cover his blaze. His is a reddish purple with ear covers as well as a nose cover.

Someday I'll make real tutorials instead of DRAW GOOD NOT BAD but for now I'm busy with school and just trying to dispel the idea of a horse hoof being a weird meat can
A blue canvas with purple drawings of hooves split up into "weird" and "natural". The weird side includes a bunch of drawings of mammal limbs ending in an awkward dark, shiny cylinder. The cylinder occasionally has a metal, U shaped horseshoe attached. The bottom is an ambiguous dark circle with no features. I derisively compare it to a plunger. There are many frownie faces. The natural side shows a normal horse's hoof, which has the cushy padded heel bulbs on the back, mostly similar to other mammalian feet, but with a nail covering the toe. It is more square and less tall and rectangular from the front. On the bottom, it's circular with a triangle in the middle coming from the heel bulbs and pointing towards the toe.

Lil prancey boy 🐴
Toast approaching a young mare who is standing at the fence off camera. He randomly gets very excited (since he is a stud colt) when mares just…exist. Toast is a grulla champagne, a light-colored horse with darker brown points. He is properly “trit-trotting” up to the iron fence, showing off his Spanish breed conformation proper. He would make such a nice little dressage pony, lol. His front left is extended forward, with the diagonal back following. The front leg is nice and straight out. His neck is up and arched. This is the kind of behavior slash movements that (in part) inspired dressage.

340 DAYS IN FOAL FOR WILDFIRE!!! 340 days is the average gestation length in horses; she really could have this baby very soon!
Wildfire, a red mare, stands in profile and is very pregnant. She has some ventral edema (swelling) on her belly which is pretty normal this far into pregnancy. She is a stout, reining bred mare. She has a relaxed expression despite the massive belly, this picture taken after just eating breakfast. She wears magenta fly boots here. You can kinda see Zira, a bay mare, also pregnant, peeking from behind Wildfire. Strawberry can also be seen on the bale at the left edge of the picture.

The moon overseeing Luna in the pasture 🌙
A picture taken mostly of the sky with pastel clouds from gathering dusk. The moon hangs high, nearly full. A black horse grazes under a bare tree in a pasture. She’s actually blue roan, but her winter coat turns her black. There’s a donkey also on the very left edge of the picture.

The carefree face of a stud colt who doesn’t know his 🥜 are leaving tomorrow.
A picture from directly in front of Toast apparently receiving the best scratches of his life on his chest. He is a grulla champagne colt, which gives him slightly darker fur on his face, making an almost lavender color on the nose. He is tilting his head and pulling his lips into a parrot mouth shape. The lense focuses heavily on his snoot as he gently writhes. Flame can be sort of seen behind him, a chestnut gelding.Toast reaches nirvana during scratchies. This is a photo of him sticking his head up straight into the air. The majesty of this stallion knows no bounds. The eye is squinted in thoughtful ecstasy as he giraffe necks.

Made for my insta but figured I’d share here too in case anybody finds it interesting! (3 more slides cont. in replies)
title of post: “Horses learn more effectively when experiencing positive emotions”The goal of this study was to explore how emotions impact learning in horses.

34 riding horses from ages 3 to 21 were studied; half of the horses were given Synthetic Equine Appeasing Hormone (EAP) while the other half were not. Then, researchers analyzed the horses’ cognition and emotions in a reward-based learning task in order to determine if emotion affects learning ability. Results showed that horses given the equine appeasing hormone (EAP) who had a more positive mental state also performed better on the learning task, giving more correct responses than horses not given EAP who had a more negative mental state.

The EAP group was correct 93% of the time, while the non-EAP/placebo group was only correct 58% of the time. The task seemed to be equally physiologically arousing for horses given the appeasing hormone and horses not given the hormone. Emotional state did not seem to have an effect on heart rate or heart rate variability. Both groups showed a significant increase in baseline heart rate during the learning task, indicating some physiological arousal.

Mar 1st ▶️ today! Wildfire is gearing up slowly for foaling! Most of this is probably edema, but she’s definitely progressing.
An older pic of Wildfire’s udder. It’s definitely bigger than normal, but most is likely edema. The latest picture of Wildfire’s udder! Definitely more swollen, so probably more edema, but we’re getting closer to the foaling window with this progress.

Strawberry, a greying red (roan?), reaches over the bars of the fence to pilfer what she believes to be food, but I was in fact empty-handed. She has a big blaze that covers her entire snoot, ans demands to be booped with its appearance. All you can see really is her nose and lips, her right eye and cheek, and her big ears poking up from behind.

Thought I would repost this bittersweet memorial piece I did for one of my very good friends of the colt they had that passed. It'll be three years since his passing, and I know he is still greatly missed. #horseart #horseartist #equineartist #memorialart
A memorial piece of a black tobiano (paint) horse. He is depicted as a pegasus here with wings that match his fur pattern. He flies above a still lake, his furthest hoof almost touching the water's surface and casting a reflection of his legs below. The sunset is brilliant and sets the sky full of fiery orange and whimsical purple to be this beloved colt's backdrop. There is some nondescript land visible across the horizon.

Love getting to hooves actually on time lol I should probably invest in more hoof mud to get rid of the last of that white line disease but I'm not super worried about it. Also last photo shows an untrimmed front vs after the trim.
A photo of the bottom of a hoof held in a gloved hand and leaned up against someone's knee where there's a hole in the jeans. It's a good hoof with a dark almost blue sole. It's slightly asymmetrical but very robust with huge, wide heels. A photo of the same hoof from the side with slight silver feathering. The fever rings that do exist are very very subtle, making it one smooth, continuous surface. There's a bevel around the toe that's barely perceptible in the dirt.A photo of the two front feet, one untrimmed and the other trimmed. The trim one is straighter, at a better angle, and baring most of her weight.

Her forelock is in a messy braid (because it’s long AF, and I felt like it was getting in her eyes). There is a very full pond behind her. I think I just found my new banner. I love my little blue mare. She really impressed me yesterday. 💜
Me riding Luna through our snowy paddock. I am wearing an orange hoodie and grey sweatpants; my helmet is blue and green (and very hard to make it out, but it has a T. rex decal on it). Luna looks like a regular ranch horse, she is a lithe blue roan mare, but the roan is less visible in her black winter coat. She walks out against the fence line with a big stride; the snow is up to her fetlocks. Her expression is alight with curiosity. She wears a hackamore with a purple and pink mecate. Shes donned in my medium brown barrel saddle and a gray pad. The woods beyond is steeped with bare trees covered in snow. The sky is somewhat more tinted blue than the snow but not by much. A large bird is flying overhead way in the distance.

Tari and I standing together. I am looking at the camera at smiling. I’m wearing my signature cold weather outfit: mulberry coveralls and my orange Jurassic Park hoodie. I’m also wearing a ball cap and have a pink warmer around my neck. Most of Tari’s body is obscured, but I’m cradling his head in my hand with his face next to mine. Tari has his ears up and forward, and his eyes are bright. Snow covers the ground and still falls steadily. Tari is dusted in powdered snow. He is a red dun Quarter Horse stallion.

“It is a good life we lead, brother.” “The best. May it never change.” “And may it never change us.” Hanging out with Tari during his hoof trim. 🫶
A picture taken on hoof trim day by my boyfriend, Ray. Ivory, our hoof trimmer and one of my best friends, and I are taking what looks to be a break from the hoof trimming extravaganza. In reality, we’re letting my senior stallion, Tari, a red dun in color, bask in the chilly wind and warm sun. We were one hoof in and, once Ivory finished it, we put the hoof down and he immediately relaxed. He sighed, licked and chewed, and his eyes got heavy; all signs that the nervous system was coming down. We let him have that moment and just watched, privileged to give this stallion the end of life care he deserves. Ivory is squatted ont he ground to the left, all bundled up in winter gear, though her hair pokes out in a bun on the top of her head. I am on the right and am laid down on my side in the grass, propped up by my elbow. I’m wearing an orange hoodie and mulberry coveralls. You can see one of Tari’s mares Chica, a bay, in the background eating hay.

A digital drawing of a pliohippus mare with her newborn foal.
Two horses stand on a dark background, the mare is mostly white, with black markings on the head, legs and stripes on the neck. The mare also has a bit of blood near her tail, but not too much. The baby is dark grey, standing near their mom, one of their legs is still wrapped in a part of a fetal membrane, which will be off very soon, as the foal is already standing and will start to move more.

Merychippus and a Happy New Year ! ✨🌿 feel free to send this cards to annoy your friends with fun facts about ancient proto-horses ☝️🤓 #paleoart #paleomemes #paleontology
In the card are featured Merychippus (Ruminant-Horse), Eohippus (Dawn-Horse) Mesohippus (Middle-Horse)

"Merychippus! and a happy new year!"

The earliest common ancestor of the modern horse is the unsuspecting, five-toed Eohippus, which lived in the early Eocene about 52 mya.*

then, 40 mya in the early Oligocene, the now only three-toed Mesohippus grazed on fruits and leaves in the ancient North-American forest.

And finally, on Christmas day 15 mya in the Miocene, a very merry and chipper Merychippus galloped along the plains - spreading holiday cheer!**
