In case you've ever wondered what it's like being empathetic toward and mindful of equine emotions in a world that's very Not, I requested trazodone for my horses' travel and my vet called me interrogating me about why I'd even consider asking for trazodone.

A snippet of a piece I'm writing right now ❤️‍🔥
Fellow Animal Empowerment abbreviated logo in maroon over a pink background. The logo shows "FAE" in all caps with a horse approaching a crouched human in the grass above it. There's a fancy divider between the logo and the blog post snippet which reads:

"Between gear to force postures and movements appealing to our own eyes, damaging to our horses' intricate bodies, and the laundry list of busted myths we choose to continue following, traditional horsemanship problems have deep-seated issues that align with the ways in which our society functions. We say the horse is a willing and happily engaged participant, a dance partner in a routine we choreographed collaboratively with them, but we taught the dance through knotted halters, thin and sharp, strategically placed on sensitive areas, flailing ropes, which peak their eyelids and show off their sclera, and lashing whips, causing them to kick up their heels, flap their tails, and be laughed at for being “silly.” The training practices commonly used then, and still today, rely heavily on intimidation, oppression, punishment, an unfair power dynamic, control and coercion, and placing ourselves at the top of the superiority chain; pushing horses below us. Inferior. Small. Unimportant in comparison to us."

Below this block of text is a divider with horses galloping in the same color as the logo on top.

Whenever I see people working with horses using R+ my heart feels so full; I could actually drop a few tears. Your horse trusts you, feels safe with you, and heard by you, and that's so beautiful! Not all horses are so lucky.

Hot take: training that operates off of fear, pain, or intimidation isn't real training. All you're really training or teaching the animal is to be on edge and have a pessimistic outlook on life.

Last summer getting masks on both these boys was a struggle, if not impossible. They were NOT fans of having things covering their adorable little faces! Got them on yesterday and it took some time but FAS was minimal and flies are out of the eyes 🪰
Bay welsh pony with a blaze and white/silver ticking across his body, he wasn't roan last year but almost looks it this year? He wears a zebra print fly mask and behind him is a palomino overo in an all black fly mask with generous ear room so the tips flop over lol

We need to stop viewing training as this task that can be completed, constantly seeking perfect performance, and instead view it as a tool to guide and support our animals in a human-centric world, and to build strong, healthy relationships with them.

The horse who changed everything for me. 💓
Big chesnut gelding sporting his winter fluff. He has a bright star on his forehead and hind socks. He's wearing a colorful halter with a geometric pattern on it, it's mostly cyan, pink, and yellow, attached is a rainbow lead rope. His ears are pricked forward and his eyes are soft as he takes a step toward the camera. Similar photo but he's now actively walking so his head has dropped and relaxed

Two crocheted ponies stand side by side. On the left is a bright copper chestnut with a white star/stripe snip combo. On the right is a black horse with a star and snip plus three white socks. The socks are mottled with black spots along the coronet band. She also has a purple ribbon tied to the end of her braided mane.
Andy, a liver chestnut mare, stands with her head over a metal gate. She has a big white star above eye level and her ears are perked. She looks bright and he coat is shiny in the golden hour light. Behind her is a dirty palomino pony.

Strawberry, a greying red (roan?), reaches over the bars of the fence to pilfer what she believes to be food, but I was in fact empty-handed. She has a big blaze that covers her entire snoot, ans demands to be booped with its appearance. All you can see really is her nose and lips, her right eye and cheek, and her big ears poking up from behind.

Managing a track system for turnout is all fun and games until the blanketed horse realized his immunity in the bitter winter. Thankfully I'm a clicker trainer, creativity is a practiced skill 😅
Florescent yellow/green traffic cone with a yellow driveway marker through the hole. Two strands of white electric tape wrap around the pole coming through the top of the come and another midway down the cone. There's blue tape (for extra visibility for the horses) securing everything to the cone as well as a piece of plain metal wire attaching the two strands of tape, briding them together and bulging out a bit to deter horses from tipping cones to get into the pasture.

🌟 Meet Hotshot - Your "first to the gate" companion 🌟 Adoptable through Neigh N Bray rescue: www.facebook.com/NeighNBray/?...
If you’re looking for a companion with a sharp mind, sensitive side, and SO much "try," Hotshot is your guy! Hotshot may not be the cuddliest of welsh ponies, but if you earn his trust, you'll find him asking for a deep wither scratch and nickering the second he spots you.

Training Highlights:

• Liberty leading- Following behind or at your side with or without a fenceline.
• Lunging via reverse roundpen- Walk, trot, and canter on verbal cues around a circle barrier.
• Bucket stationing- Verbal cue "bucket" to send him off to a nearby bucket.
• Targeting- Hand and handheld targets, following and stationary.
• Haltering- Hotshot doesn't like being approached and having his halter thrown on quickly and sloppily but he's happy to halter himself if you take his pace.

Improving Hotshot's comfortability with handling and trailer loading will take someone gentle, kind, and patient. ❤️‍🩹 • Hotshot has spent a lot of time exploring trailer loading but has reservations about getting his hind feet up and in.
• He has had a successful vet visit under sedation and did well.
• Hotshot's comfortable with grooming over most of his body while relaxing by his pasture-mates or over a hay net, and will even lean in if you find an itchy spot! But he has concerns about leg and hoof handling and will need continued support to help him overcome his fears.

Despite being in his late teens, Hotshot is a bit of a social butterfly and mingles with everyone. He currently lives with two other geldings and an in tact jack- at times he's rough housing with the youngest of the group and other times he's sunbathing alongside his older donkey pal. 🥰

Note: Hotshot has EMS and will do best with a lifestyle that manages his sugar levels. (Low NSC and/or soaked hay, ideally little to no pasture, muzzling, and carefully choosing any additional feeds or supplements.) Hotshot LOVES clicker training, he's motivated, engaged, and such a quick learner; just be sure to watch his sugars here too. ❤️

Ready to give Hotshot his forever home? Apply today! 🤗Bay welsh pony with a blaze and the sweetest face ❤️

I will die on the hill that altering the hooves in any way that is known to be damaging to the horse to "enhance" a gait is by the book animal abuse. Padded performance, especially sored but even without, is a celebration of mutilation and does nothing but harm the horses for profit and ego.
