Three male Mallard ducks taking off from the reeds at the side of a lake. All three birds are more or less centre of the shot and all are facing left so that’s their left sides are visible. The nearest (on the right) is about a foot off the water surface with its wings in front of it in a downward beat, its head is level with the ground. The second is a little lower and has its wings back behind it in an upward beat. The third still has its feet touching the water and its body elongated upward, its wings are behind it and high.
They have a yellow bill and a glossy, iridescent green head with a narrow white ring on the neck. The breast is chestnut brown, the body is grey; turning to white in the underbody. They have a distinctive purple-blue speculum on their wings, which is bordered by white. The feet are orange.
The foreground is short reeds with water visible in between and the droplets and splashes from the birds can be seen throughout the foreground, particularly under the birds and to the right.

Kaikai exudes joy! She is the happiest little elephant, who starts every morning 'dancing' into the new day! Her best friend Bungalu is just as content, but a little more subdued about it! Rescued as a newborn orphan, she will grow up in our care until she's ready for the wild.

A Eurasian Curlew standing on barnacle covered rocks at the edge of the sea. The bird is slightly right of centre of the shot, facing left so that its left side can be seen.
It has a very long, downward curved bill, which is brownish. Its plumage on top is a mottled grey-brown with dark streaking throughout, the plumage gets darker towards the back of the bird. Its underbelly is cream coloured and is also dark streaked. It has long greyish legs, which can only be seen to just below the knee in the shot.
The foreground is a dark rock which appears to be one large slab with large crack and crevasses throughout. It is curved rather than sharp, and mostly covered in a thin layer of yellowish barnacles with a few limpets here and there. The background is a calm and out of focus sea with a whitish appearance from the light

For Helen’s #BirdSuperModel and #UnsungBirds I chose the Cuckoo. Taken in April I presume it had just arrived from its big trip because it allowed me to come real close. All it had in mind was food. Some call them parasites, but they do what they do to let their species survive. #BirdOfTheDay 🪶
