Anyways as with all things successfully industrialized the system allowed a huge production boom which helped centralize readers, but also created the typical problems of reproduction: dehumanization, extreme output, and the overwhelming similarity that emerges when someone tries to copy a form.

So this is a conversation that's actually two convos. One's a conversation about marketing, capital, production, and material industry. Which is hilarious and totally different than the conversation about when the genre first began to emerge due to writer's/reader's interest.

and the work created within the framework of the label ! Often when people say 'it didn't exist' I find they actually mean that the systems weren't supporting the production of material . . . of course readers have always known what they were reading for and publishing systems had to catch up!

and so we had these works that were being created and were being shelved in adjacent genre-systems (often children's lit, though occasionally romance, thriller, SFFH, etc) And now that we have market-wide categorization we can more easily discuss both the work that pre-dates the labelling

I love having this conversation with people; it's so interesting because it basically boils down to an etymological question: did the genre exist before we had collectively agreed upon name for it? And it's like, yes it did—but we didn't have nomenclature to actively sort at the industry-wide level

My standard reply to all ai book scammers that I am a practicing witch and placing a curse on them unless they cease their wicked ways. Highly recommend this strategy to other writers & publishing folk. Twice now I've had scammers email back to ask me to lift the curse.

He's credited by Japan's cultural historians as having personally saved enormous amounts of folklore from being completely lost, too. Hundreds of yokai legends are only known now because he collected them from remote communities that are themseles often gone.

This is maybe my favorite horror novel of the year so far.

For Arnault, money is something to be hoarded, to be counted and accounted for—in this, he’s perfectly in keeping with the classic representations of the Vampire, resting in their coffin full of gold. But the dramatic tension of Arnault’s relationship with the vampire siblings is that he is a vampire that is always-already nostalgic. At heart, Arnault is a crypt-dweller being left behind by the shifts underway in the mode of production. In contrast, money for Victor and Françoise is not to be hoarded but is to be put to work: a liquid, endlessly fungible tool for extraction and the satiation of desire. There’s a telling scene in which Arnault accompanies Victor and Françoise to one of Paris’s new department stores (an homage to Zola again—this time, The Ladies Paradise) and finds himself bewildered by the sheer quantity of commodities available in the same place and at such scale. Ultimately, the red sacrament of the title isn’t simply blood as human essence or life force but blood as the flowing operation of capitalism itself—its profits, its necessary casualties and its costs.
