Mount St. Helens Archive @mountsthelens1980.bsky.social · 17/06/2026
Physiographic illustration is a craft, honed over years of careful attention to detail. After May 18, the USGS published this triptych of Mount St. Helens by cartographer Tau Rho Alpha and geologist Jim Moore, with the support of David Jones. Just how did the north face change? See for yourself.
USGS physiographic diagram sheet titled "Sequential physiographic diagrams of Mount St. Helens, Washington, 1979-80," published 1980 by Tau Rho Alpha, James G. Moore, and David R. Jones. Three hand-rendered perspective illustrations show the mountain looking south: upper left labeled Summer 1979, depicting a symmetrical snow-covered cone; upper right labeled May 15, 1980, showing the pronounced bulge deforming the north flank three days before the eruption; lower left labeled May 26, 1980, showing the devastated mountain with its north face collapsed and a massive crater open to the sky. Lower right contains two semicircular scale diagrams in feet/miles and meters/kilometers, with notes that vertical exaggeration is 2X and all views are toward the south, plus a small index map locating the mountain in the Pacific Northwest. Sheet shows moderate toning. Image credit: U.S. Geological Survey/public domain.

What do we do in times of fear and crisis? I thought I was in danger, but wasn’t. The architect thought he had a little more time, but didn’t. In the moment, we can’t know. It’s a deeply personal decision but the lesson I still carry from that day is we lock arms and help those we can get to safety.

Hundreds of millions of birds were migrating over the region last night. And - I believe - their flocks were picked up on radar. Looks like a major flyaway began near the marshy wetlands and shore along the southern tip of Lake Michigan.

The Spanish town Sigüenza, where we saw last week’s eclipse, has a lovely pair of tiled maps in its train station. Hard to capture in a photo, but they have a lot of 3D detail. But railway construction meant bus substitution, so we spent more time figuring that out than looking at the maps 😭

This snippet from a map in 1839 shows the grid for Austin and, in the left corner, William Barton's cabin on Spring Creek -- today, Barton Creek. Notice the dotted-line walking path from the edge of town (West Ave.) to Barton Springs and the little island/sand bar where they forded the river.
Subset of 1839 map of Austin and the surrounding area showing the proposed grid laid out by Edward Burleson (almost no one lived there, yet) and, in the left corner, William Barton's cabin on "Spring Creek," which today are called Barton Creek and Barton Springs. There is a dotted line showing a walking path To Barton's that fords the river at a spot with some sort of island, rock formation or sand bar in the middle. This was before the river was dammed to create Town Lake.
