I'm sad to share my Local editing team was recently laid off from The Marshall Project.

My editors and I represented about 100 years of journalism experience reporting and editing for news organizations across the country.

For the last four years, I was responsible for imagining and building Local news teams for the national nonprofit. We produced criminal justice work that ran in local papers, on websites and on TV broadcasts, helping to fill the coverage gaps created by deep cuts to local resources.

The awards were plenty, but the most rewarding moments came when someone learned about our work or mentioned one of my reporters to me by name. I'll never forget a woman coming up to me at a voter disenfranchisement event we held in Jackson, Mississippi. She told me it was the best conversation she'd been part of in her 40 years of living in the area.

I am forever grateful for the chance to hire such talented journalists, build new models and have a tangible impact on local communities. I am also proud to have helped increase the number of investigative journalists of color, to mentor other investigative journalists outside my newsroom and to help other managers rethink how they fulfill audience needs.

Gonna take some time to breathe, then get back to it.

wapo columnist
I use AI to do research (i.e., find things to read, explain parts of academic papers I find ambiguous or confusing), transcribe interviews, generate pushback on my column thesis, suggest trims when I'm over my word count, sharpen podcast interview questions, and perform a final fact check on columns and editorials. But mostly it's compressing the ancillary tasks to the main job: reading, thinking, and writing.

One article that Nick used AI to produce for Fortune is an error-riddled obit for the Blackstone exec killed during the mass shooting at their offices last summer. screenshots from @columjournreview.bsky.social article, here: www.cjr.org/laurels-and-...
It would be hard to make this week's Midtown Manhattan shooting any more devastating. But Fortune found a way.

Among the four murder victims in Monday's rampage was Wesley LePatner, a top real estate executive at Blackstone Inc. and a forty-three-year-old mother of two. On Tuesday, Fortune ran a bizarre, disrespectful, and mercifully short obituary about LePatner.

Under the unfortunate subhead
"FORTUNE INTELLIGENCE," the obituary:

• misstated LePatner's age;

• put the gunman's name into the lede;• included a graf about his football injury;

• linked to a New York congressman's tweet, without offering evidence the two knew each other;

• published this photo caption: "An image of Wesley LePatner";

• and added this line, which is reprinted here verbatim: He honored her sense of civics, as a ".

The most informative part of the obit is the editor's note at the end: "For this story, Fortune used generative Al to help with an initial draft. An editor verified the accuracy of the information before publishing."

New from me: The lack of funding for preservation is emblematic of a broader divide among housing advocates in Colorado. Gov. Polis has prioritized new supply, while non-profit providers say the state should focus on low-income households with the greatest need coloradosun.com/2026/03/23/c...

Colorado is losing 1 affordable housing unit for every 2 it builds. But the state keeps rejecting efforts to stop the bleeding.
Gov. Jared Polis and state housing officials have prioritized new construction over preserving existing affordable rental housing.
