Happy October Eve! For Hallozeen this year, I made a 16-page walkthrough for a 36 year-old shareware classic. Primarily out of trash. I have no idea who the target audience is for this, besides me, but here you go! emmfoolery.itch.io/a-hallozeen-... #dosgaming #retrogaming
The opening game screen of Hugo's House of Horrors, by David P. Gray, for MS-DOS. A game released like, two weeks before I was born. Hugo's outside a haunted house! Spooky.

So combined with the thin "real" game, you have a TCG where you can engage with deckbuilding anywhere from "None" to "A Lot," and it is probably the most fun part of the game. Anecdotally, I think I played maybe one real game session, but I spent hours poring over these cards in a cabin on vacation.

This is a really great game for exploring this question. I think the On the Edge starter decks were effectively a random assortment of cards, ostensibly a statement that "no deckbuilding is required." But deckbuilding in this game is very aligned with the narrative: you are building a conspiracy.

I have a newish publication at @analoggamestudies.bsky.social ! I co-wrote a piece on what "gameplay" is in TCGs and whether or not deckbuilding is gameplay (I think so! Most people do! But the scholarship and a lot of general writing splits it off!) escholarship.org/uc/item/2gt8...

This is an incoherent jumble of arguments! So I think framing this as mere drama surrounding hot-button issues is either misinformed or disingenuous. I have eyes and I can see that this is bad.

Here are the takeaways: - the finalists for this award are a "trendy mix" - the committee chose the finalists in order to do virtue signaling - Rascal's stance, which I share, is that awards aren't important - the winner deserved an award - I was on the selection committee for this award

Someone made a comment about how the mess was just social media drama, then deleted their post. So I wanted to give another example Rascal's low quality that didn't involve drama. Here's a screenshot of the final graf of their coverage of the 2026 Diana Jones award. www.rascal.news/mischief-toy...
Text from Rascal coverage of the Diana Jones award:

This year’s finalists include what has become a trendy mix of thinkers, games, and ways in which the committee can restate its progressive ideals. While my (or, rather, Rascal’s) opinion on awards shows hasn’t changed, Mischief Toy Store is deserving of accolades, laurels, and praise for their work within their community and as an example of the ways in which everyday acts of kindness and resistance can occur at any time — and should occur more often.

[Disclosure: The author served as a volunteer member of the 2026 Diana Jones selection committee.]

Part of the job is to read what is written and consider how others might receive it. This is called editing. So my criticism is actually that this journalist is not doing the job. I am not an editor, so if even I can catch this, it's pretty bad. I think the TTRPG community deserves better than this!

Well, this is a golden opportunity for them to improve by learning that sentences in a particular order convey a specific meaning! I think understanding that would be pretty important for an organization whose medium is the written word

michael @modality.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
For me, it's impossible to take seriously a writer who puts these sentences in this order. What it says is that they've learned "we'll add this disclaimer so that people don't yell at us" as if "not getting yelled at" is the point. But the point is that people are yelling to get you to take a side

RASCAL NEWSLETTER: The "Genocide Is Bad" organization has determined that this owners of this golf course actively support genocide. They have asked people not to play golf here, so go forward fully informed about the political context surrounding it. Now watch this drive
A screenshot from Rascal's newsletter which reads:

[Blizzard Entertainment is owned by Microsoft, which has been named a "priority target" by the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement over its complicity in Israel's ongoing occupation of Palestine and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. That boycott explicitly extends to Xbox and Microsoft's gaming products. I am about to spend a few paragraphs writing about a game I love (warts and all), so go forward fully informed about the political context surrounding it.]

World of Warcraft has once again activated the siren call, luring me back to shores I've explored for the majority of my life at this point. This latest temptation is the strongest and most devious, nostalgia mixed with big promises in the form of Wow: Forever. (The essay goes on.)

the thing about a book is that it is a powered machine. if you want to stop and think about it, you just do that. you stop putting in the effort to read. with a podcast or video or whatever, this process is inverted. you have to actively choose to stop the playback so you can think

A red flame in Barad-dûr, based on the conversation in the most recent shelved by genre episode. I wanted the city to look both industrial and unsettling, so I tried to use a real mix of building styles, and avoid too many curves/natural shapes.
A scan of a pen and ink drawing of Barad-dûr, inspired by the conversation in the most recent shelved by genre episode. It shows the moment when Frodo, on Mount Doom, looks towards Barad-dûr and as the clouds part sees a red flame in the highest tower, the only image of Sauron the books give us. The drawing depicts barad-dûr in dense, hatched pen, full of narrow, crowded streets and industrial buildings, shrouded in darkness and cloud. A red pen has been used to mark the flame, the only colour in the drawing.
