A rather more honest Jeffrey Archer obituary by @brokenbottleboy.bsky.social I kept coming back to Coghlan: "You're a liar. He's a liar and he knows it. He's even putting his wife through it. I've got nothing he's got money. I can't even go back to work" brokenbottleboy.substack.com/p/here-lies-...

Here lies Jeffrey Archer

Yep. She told one journalist this morning that her speech starts at 11:15am and another that it was at 12. If she can’t get simple details like that right then I’m not holding out a lot of hope for as a potential PM.

RIP Jeffery Archer.
Simon Farnaby as Julian Fawcett MP in Ghosts. A character partly inspired by corporate Tory MPs in the 1980s like Alan Clark and Jeffery Archer

Blog update: In July 1988, Joy Division's "Atmosphere" topped the NME Indie Charts, though its re-release and Anton Corbijn directed video sat uncomfortably with some. Notably though, it's the first indie number one to treat its singer as a rock legend. indienumber1s.blogspot.com/2026/10/118-...

Yes absolutely agree about the 80s. The simplistic Tory view is that everything got better/everyone got richer but obviously that’s not the case. Hard to say where we’re going now. So much depends on world events.

Those crappy adverts you get at the bottom of websites... Fair play to his wife though, she knows how to hold a pose.
Screenshot of two terrible adverts from a website with the same photo of the same woman sitting on a beach but with two different backgrounds and the tagline "He Took A Photo Of His Wife - Then Looked at It Again" or similar. Who falls for this rubbish?

Pete Morgan @mobymooby.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That’s a great point about the scale compared to WW1. Makes it all the weirder about the lack of mainstream coverage but cutting off international media access is a depressingly successful tactic.

It makes you wonder how much longer he can keep it going with numbers like that.

Pete Morgan @mobymooby.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It’s also getting / being granted access to the area I suppose. I’m framing all of this through memories of nightly reports from The Falklands, the Balkans, Gulf War, Afghanistan (Russian and US invasions) and so on. It just struck me the other day re: the sheer numbers of casualties.

Pete Morgan @mobymooby.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It’s just bizarre in the modern day context with so many camera phones and constant footage of everything. (Much like the coverage of Gaza, shutting down media access is a depressingly successful tactic).

I’m not saying there isn’t an element of truth in the post. Some cities were certainly run down but it wasn’t *all* like that. It’s become The Narrative though. Synth-pop and music certainly helped turn things around though!

Instead coverage of the war seems to be all about drones hitting buildings in Kiev or fuel depots inside Russia. It’s a weird disconnect that makes it all feel unreal.

Pete Morgan @mobymooby.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I can’t get my head around these casualty figures. 46,000 Russian ‘soldiers’ are killed in one month in a war in Europe and we get almost no images of it. TV news isn’t dominated by footage from the frontline. John Simpson (or today’s equivalent) isn’t marching up to the battle with a camera crew.

I’ve seen this kind of post a few times and whilst it’s true that Simon Clarke wouldn’t have any first hand experience of the 1970s and 80s, it’s perfectly valid to have an opinion on a time before you were born. The fact that his opinion is overly simplistic jingoism should be the point.
Screenshot of a post in X by Simon Clarke MP making a cliched argument about how terrible the 1970s were in Britain (because of Labour) and brilliant the 1980s were thaks to Thatcher with a comment above by a BlueSky poster saying how would he know because he wasn’t born until 1984

Deleting old files and found this I made with a comic books app back in 2007 just to see how it worked (using a photo I took on a holiday in France). You can't beat a round of mini golf.
Comic book style effect on a photo of a French sign that says MINIGOLFS. The fake comic text says HE KNEW THAT IF ALL ELSE FAILED...THERE WAS ALWAYS...MINI-GOLF

Cultural post #1: Enjoyed S1 of Sugar on Apple TV but wasn’t sure if S2 would be worth watching after *EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED* (no spoilers) Actually it’s fantastic TV: cinematography, editing, music, script, the nods to Chandler and film noir. It’s nice to watch something unashamedly ‘arty’
Colin Farrell as a private detective in Sugar from Apple TV.
