🧬 New paper out in @molbioevol.bsky.social ! 🪰 Combining long-read sequencing and microscopy, we discovered a remarkable Mega-NUMT in Drosophila paulistorum. This Mega-NUMT occurs in ~40% of sampled natural populations and across at least 3 semispecies suggesting persistance. doi.org/10.1093/molb...

Montoliu-Nerin et al. discover a Mega-NUMT in Drosophila paulistorum genomes and speculate that it is maintained at relatively high prevalence in nature by balancing selection or due to a yet-undetermined function. 🔗 academic.oup.com/mbe/article/... #societyjournal #evobio #molbio

It's out!! Using population and comparative genomics of Podospora fungi, we show that a class of genes called #NLRs display evolutionary signatures that are consistent with an immune function, much like in plants and animals! 1/n 🍄 #popgen #balancingselection #introgression doi.org/10.1093/gbe/...

Fantastic final plenary at #SMBE2026 by Moises Exposito-Alonso; transplant experiments suggest that Arabidopsis populations are lagging in adaptation to rising temperature by 2°C; other species likely worse.
