a long, but lovely day on the iron road celebrating the opening of Auckland's City Rail Link! what a fantastic addition to a fantastic city, extremely glad I could make it across the ditch for this please enjoy this little thread of some of my highlights from today
an Auckland EMU arriving into Parnell station at 5:30am this morning, one of the first trains into the City Rail Link. The sun has not even risen yetthe main station building for Te Waihorotiu, with a beautiful blue/grey tiled top and a brick bottom, looking very fitting on this prominent street cornera group of people walking through a cross passage at Karanga-a-Hape Station, with the classic London Crossrail/Sydney Metro design language, a very round passage with sandstone walls and white fins on the roof. one thing I really didn't take advantage of last time? Norfolk Island's beautifully dark skies. being separated from the nearest large city by 1000km helps a lot, and so does barely having any street lighting and getting lucky with no moonlight. nice to see our beautiful galaxy again 🥰🥰

only took nearly a year but indeed we are getting closer to abolishing some of Melbourne's most laughably bad frequencies. the combination of a fuel crisis and an election year can be a powerful motivator. 10 minute all day frequencies and bus reform next to seal the deal? 👀👀 nah, just kidding... 👀
The Budget invests $77.5 million to deliver:

Shepparton line:
nine return services every weekday – almost double the number of current services
Belgrave and Lilydale lines:
trains every 20 mins to the end of the line on weekday evenings – up from every 30 mins
trains every 10 mins on the Ringwood corridor on weekday evenings – up from every 15 mins
Glen Waverley and Alamein lines:
trains every 20 mins on weekday evenings – up from every 30 mins
Mernda and Hurstbridge lines:
trains every 20 mins to Mernda and Eltham all weekend – up from every 30 mins in the evening and every 40 mins on Sunday morning
services every 10 mins between the city and Clifton Hill – up from every 15 mins on weekend evenings and every 20 mins on Sunday mornings into the city
These new services meet growing demand for evening and weekend services. Time ranges listed are averages. Thanks to our investments, even more additional services are ready to hit the network in the coming months:

Werribee line: two additional trains per hour in the mornings and afternoons
Sandringham line: trains every 10 minutes between peak periods
Craigieburn line: trains at least every 20 minutes on the line, including late at night and on weekends
Upfield line: trains at least every 20 minutes on the line, including late at night and on weekends
Seymour line: trains every hour between 8:00am and 9:00pm on weekends
Shepparton line: five return services on Saturday and Sunday
This is on top of more services now running on the Gippsland Line – with trains now running every 40 minutes.

We’re also slashing the cost of public transport, with free travel now and half-price fares from June 1.

the beep of the PB/5 pedestrian crossing button has been officially recognised by the National Film and Sound Archive as part of their Sounds of Australia collection for this year. you love to see it
Screenshot from the NFSA website which reads:

PB/5 pedestrian crossing button
Because it set the rhythm of Australian streets, one crossing at a time.

Introduced in 1984, the PB/5 pedestrian crossing button reshaped how Australians move through cities and suburbs. Designed by David Wood, Louis Challis and Frank Hulscher, it was created to support pedestrians who are blind or have low vision through sound and touch.

The locator ‘tick’, vibrating arrow and steady crossing tone are functional, but also instantly recognisable. Produced mechanically and in real time, the sound is direct, rhythmic and hard to ignore. Over decades, it has settled into daily life — a small but constant presence at intersections, train stations and busy streets.

Its reach extends beyond infrastructure. The crossing tick was later sampled in Billie Eilish’s ‘Bad Guy’, carrying a piece of Australian street sound into global pop.

The recording captures how thoughtful sound design can shape behaviour, attention and safety — and how an everyday utility can become a shared cultural reference point.

indeed it has
the Swanston Street exit to the new entrance behind Young and Jackson's, opposite St Paul's Cathedral. it's a decidedly narrow walkwaylarge cavernous space with some kinda interesting light fixtures and a great view of the plane trees on Swanston Street leading into a fairly blank walkway. everything is quite grey, even compared to the other stations the vast blank expanse opening up into a small open square linking up to Flinders Lane via Scott and Cocker Alleys, two narrow laneways, of which Scott Alley is much nicer with cafes and shops, while Cocker Alley is just an empty laneway with a construction gantry above it. there is supposed to be an operation development above this area but signs of progress are minimal/nonexistent looking down Scott Alley with the new wayfinding signage, there's signs for a barber, a travel agent, an excellent Banh mi shop, tables and chairs for outdoor dining for another cafe, and a restaurant visible on the other side of Flinders Lane
