you can just buy trains. it's really that simple
011
melbourne metropolitan busways board @mmbb.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
new Zealand has far bigger problems with its loading gauge (completely different and distinct from track gauge), which is smaller than most European countries. widening the track just makes that problem even worse and makes it even more likely you need to change every bridge and tunnel everywhere

spending tens of billions of dollars on changing literally every single piece of infrastructure for little to no benefit is the most absurd idea when you could just buy trains from this little, obscure, train hating country that uses 1067mm known as "Japan"
240
melbourne metropolitan busways board @mmbb.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
what on earth are you on about? there's over 100,000km of 1067mm railways in the world, including several thousand just across the Tasman Sea. there are really no meaningful differences between standard gauge and 1067mm in the 21st century

incredible things...

the tunnel was already over a billion dollars per km so any deferred expense was worth it, but from what I can see the trains are all still driven manually by lineside signals, so no PSD integration. I believe the stations are futureproofed for them though?

I could say a lot more but I'll wrap this thread up here and leave you with a selection of photos I took of the amazing artwork Horotiu on the ceiling of the main entrance at Te Waihorotiu. I could have spent hours looking at it from different angles just watching the light catch. thanks Auckland!

Karanga-a-Hape station is also quite lovely and provides much, better access to K Road.. ..but I'm deeply concerned about our claim to the 2nd longest escalator in the southern hemisphere being usurped, in November I'll vote for whoever promises to extend the state library escalator by 1.1 metres
A train arriving into platform 2 at Karanga-a-Hape station, with it's nice rounded platforms. There's a few people on the platform watching the train arrive in awethe passage leading up to the longest escalators in new Zealand, and the 2nd longest in the southern hemisphere the 43 metre long escalators navigating a 33m rise to take people from platform level to just below street level at the peak of a ridgelinethe plaque celebrating the longest escalators in new Zealand, written in both Te Reo Maori and English, like everything else in the CRL (and NZ in general)

I was however, really surprised to find that some of the brand new stations feature curved platforms, albeit quite gentle curves. All of Auckland's train fleet have gap fillers at the doors to reduce gaps, so the risks are lower, but these are pretty much forbidden back home!
a photo of platform 1 at Te Waihorotiu, which shows the gentle inwards curve before bending sharply outwards immediately at the end of the platformthe gently curved platform at Maungawhau, which joins up with straight track justt a few hundred metres after the platform another view of the curbed platform 1 at Te Waihorotiu, this time with a train and passengers

I think my favourite station has to be Te Waihorotiu, which is expected to become the busiest station in the country (and rightly so, being in the heart of the biggest city's CBD), and it is expansive. I will be calling it the Tamaki Makaurau Space Station from here on out
people wandering around the concourse located directly above the platform at Te Waihorotiu, which is as long as a city block and gently curves around the platforms. It almost looks like a sci-fi set a train arriving at platform 1 on an East West line service to Makaurau as some gunzels (and a few potential legitimate commuters) wait to boardthe Victoria St entrance to Te Waihorotiu, which procides access from both sides of a street on a steep grade by providing a gentle ramp from street level on one side of Albert St, and a full entrance with escalators and lifts on the other side of the street, which is a solid 5+ metres above the other entrance passengers at the top of the escalators from the platform to the concourse, with a skylight directly above them and a huge X shaped beam bisecting the shot

a long, but lovely day on the iron road celebrating the opening of Auckland's City Rail Link! what a fantastic addition to a fantastic city, extremely glad I could make it across the ditch for this please enjoy this little thread of some of my highlights from today

new apartments going up next to a train station: you bloody love to see it would be nice if there wasn't a motorway inbetween them and the station but it's a start
an Auckland EMU pulling away from Greenlane station, with an under construction apartment complex visible through a gap in the lineside treesthe more completed half of the apartments, with a fairly nice, inoffensive brick finish and normal sized windows. not a glass reflective tower or a white and black box, big win

all of the above photos were taken on my DSLR with a ~10 second exposure, balanced on the ground or my bag because I forgot my tripod. this photo is what my phone produced with its long exposure mode, not too bad really. but there's definitely way more satellites visible than even 10 years ago 😔
a photo of the Milky way taken on a Google Pixel 7 Pro. presumably some "AI" computational photography stuff is mucking with the image because there's minimal blurring of the stars even though this was about a 1 and a half minute exposure, which should be really smeared without a tracking tripod

one thing I really didn't take advantage of last time? Norfolk Island's beautifully dark skies. being separated from the nearest large city by 1000km helps a lot, and so does barely having any street lighting and getting lucky with no moonlight. nice to see our beautiful galaxy again 🥰🥰

once again delighted to confirm that norfolk island is bloody lovely. and I'm assured there is no risk to the supply of Norfolk Island pine trees for Australia's urban foreshores for years to come
