IN NEW ISSUE: Can mainstreaming of the far right help normalise undemocratic practices? @mlorimer.bsky.social & Cavallaro explore the case of Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy, showing how the party still displays elements of continuity with its neofascist predecessor. OPEN ACCESS: buff.ly/vzjuT1y
Abstract
The mainstreaming of the far right is a defining feature of European politics, raising concerns that incorporating far right parties into democratic politics could lead to the normalisation of undemocratic ideas. This paper explores this contention in the case of Brothers of Italy, a radical right party with extreme right roots. Conceptualising mainstreaming as the result of moderation or normalisation, it assesses whether Brothers of Italy can facilitate the normalisation of undemocratic ideas. The analysis evaluates ideological, organisational and symbolic continuity and change between Brothers of Italy and its predecessors: the extreme right Italian Social Movement and the conservative National Alliance. Drawing on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of party programmes, the study finds limited ideological continuity, suggesting restricted potential for normalising extremism. However, continuity in party personnel and narratives highlights ongoing organisational and symbolic links, indicating that Brothers of Italy may still indirectly contribute to the normalisation of extremism.

It all feels like a bit of a gamble, but clearly the idea was that Bardella would have been an even riskier bet.

Marta Lorimer @mlorimer.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Dealing with b will be more complicated, but she’s probably hoping the electorate will simply not care enough.

Marta Lorimer @mlorimer.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Le Pen has announced she is running. To deal with problem a), she has announced that she will appeal today’s decision (which also helps with b because it upholds a narrative of innocence - not appealing is an implicit admission of guilt).

But Bardella has never been put under any real kind of scrutiny, especially not of the kind he’d face as a presidential candidate. There is no guarantee he would withstand the demands of a presidential campaign.
100
Marta Lorimer @mlorimer.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
As for Bardella, he has certain strengths. His youth might make him feel like a new face (though he’s been around long enough that he will not feel quite as new) and he can speak to a centre-right electorate that Le Pen does not have access to. Some polls show him doing better than Le Pen.
100
Marta Lorimer @mlorimer.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Her electorate might not care too much, but as. Presidential candidate, she’d have to attract beyond that. Responding to critiques also leave her less time to develop her own programmatic ideas (though given their thinness, that might not be too bad.)
100
Marta Lorimer @mlorimer.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
On the other hand, it’s hard to see how she campaign a) it she cannot physically do so (which could be the case at least for the early stages of the campaign) and b) when her adversaries will want to point out constantly that she has been found guilty of embezzlement.
100
Marta Lorimer @mlorimer.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Le Pen might still want to run. Unlike Bardella, she has acquired a lot of experience with presidential campaigns, and may feel like a safer bet as the unquestioned leader of the party.
100
Marta Lorimer @mlorimer.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
Couple of thoughts on the Le Pen trial while we wait to hear about her decision on whether to stand or not. She has been found guilty, but could still run. So the judges have not made the decision for her - and it’s a difficult decision.
