There's nothing wrong with AI that couldn't be fixed by eliminating the profit motive and turning to academics and professional scientists to research each advance. Scientists do work with deadly viruses, they do it in a controlled environment and they don't rush.

Genocide is the commission of specific acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. In the #AI debate we are talking about the same but for our entire species. What do we call that? Extinction doesn't quite capture it for me.

For many years I wondered, "how bad will Republicans have to get before the media/political establishment in the US gets over its endless obsession with scolding & tone policing the left?" I think at this point we have to acknowledge that the answer is: never. Literally never.

Thoughts for July 5th…
Men who look upon themselves born to reign, and others to obey, soon grow insolent; selected from the rest of mankind their minds are early poisoned by importance; and the world they act in differs so materially from the world at large, that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interests, and when they succeed to the government are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the dominions.

I think about this quote every single day and I think about how much potential we, as humans and as a country, have lost because of hate. Our Constitution and institutions would be so much stronger right now if they were also built with Natives, Black people, and women as equals.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

It's not that things are stable — far f-ing from it — it's that all the most likely futures flowing from this massive instability don't map to our outdated cultural tropes of apocalypse. That should unsettle us more, not less, as we lack imaginings of utterly discontinuous but ongoing futures.
