Now that we’re well into summer, I think it’s time to announce here FSU’s polisci dept’s hiring last year. (I meant to do at the end of the year but forgot.) First up, James Gibson, previously of WashU, will be joining us in the fall as the Regent’s Research Professor. This is a huge coup for us.

In our surveys, many legal professionals and candidates expressed skepticism about the fairness and transparency of the process. Yet there is broad agreement on the need for reforms that would improve transparency, strengthen candidate vetting, and increase public esteem.

Our research demonstrates that, though the reforms were promoted as a way to democratize the judiciary and partisan campaigning was prohibited, electoral participation and candidate success were strongly shaped by partisan dynamics.

Amanda Driscoll and I have been studying the reform with support from the NSF. Drawing on official election returns and surveys of the public, attorneys, and candidates, our research has examined how these reforms have reshaped both the judiciary and public perceptions of it.
