Very good summary of the troubling changes for federally-regulated workers (and two good ones, tbh) in the omnibus legislation tables in parliament this week. www.thestar.com/business/why... "federally regulated" = the ~10% of the job market in transportation, ports, telcom, banking.

Why unions say Canada's new labour bill will make strikes 'all but impossible' in regulated sectors
Experts say Ottawa's Building Canada Strong Act hands the labour minister and government 'unchecked' authority to suspend strikes based on 'national interest.'

Lake Ontario's name comes from the Wyandot word Ontarí'io, which is typically translated as "beautiful lake". The Kanienʼkéha called it Katarokwi. Samuel de Champlain called it Lac de St. Louis. The name Lacus Ontario was first recorded in 1660 by Francis Creuxius.

Clearly a mistake to put so many eggs in the US basket. But can diversification be accomplished on the backs of small to medium enterprises? It’s hard for this non-economist to see that multinationals and foreign-owned businesses care at all about Canada’s economic independence and sovereignty.

Right? And if he was “advocating”, as Vance said, what exactly did he advocate and for whom?

If Vance was telling the truth (big if) that JJ was “advocating” for Canada, then he’s not very good at it. We’ll stick with the elected leaders, thanks.

Carney covered all the bases with this approach. For those in the affected industries he had to show a good faith effort, perhaps knowing this would be the result anyway. But this is just getting started. Hoping, maybe futilely, for a global hard reset of trade relations with the USA.

I don’t like the message either. But the truckers who were diverting to cross at Sarnia may have a different view. I think the public interest question here (to say nothing of the very expensive asset sitting idle) means that no solution would be a good one. Rock, hard place etc.

The transparency (or lack of) in communications about this deal is troubling. That said, I wish I knew how a better deal could have been made to get the bridge open and start generating any revenue at all. Wait it out?

“But it must do so within a context in which the question “is it legal?” no longer makes sense. Instead, the question confronting Canada is: “How can a liberal-democratic nation survive next to a much more powerful country with no respect for the rule of law?”

The first line of the legislation is pretty clear about the purpose: “An Act to provide for old age security”. I dunno, I’m an old Canadian who thinks it’s quite reasonable to have a means tested component to the amount of the pension I get funded by general revenues.
