I worry that I may be losing my soul, occupied with trivialities as evil becomes banal by its universality

The question we're all asking is do Benjamin Wittes and Roger Parloff know what rpf is?

As I await my dinner companions, I contemplate a question of etiquette: when pouring water for myself, do I fill the glasses of my absent friends? On the one hand, it's impolite to fill only my glass. On the other, moving water from the bottle to a glass will cause it to warm faster. A conundrum.

This kind of racism is permissible in mainstream US outlets if the subject is a Muslim

Passkeys really are so much better than passwords. The cross-device sign-in mechanism in particular is inspired.

I may be a simple country hyperchicken but I do think that once the autocomplete machine can produce a novel attack on seven round AES it's not helpful to call it an autocomplete machine anymore

Not a single word about how these tariffs violate both our WTO & USCMA obligations. Every time Trump does this, the NYT & other outlets simply write as if we live in an international vacuum, where the US has no obligations under signed, ratified international treaties. It's journalistic malpractice.

Magdalene Visaggio was once in seminary, training to become a Catholic priest. Now she's a snarky online trans girl like the rest of us. In a challenging new essay for Assigned, she writes about the toll being hated for who she is has taken on her psyche. assignedmedia.org/breaking-new...

This is a really great way of putting it. (And a really useful lens for examining how people's needs are framed more broadly.)

The past year was a real fuckin rollercoaster. Shocking levels of mental health treatment. Well, not ECT, but TMS and ketamine. Also I guess AI is a thing, and last time I told a story about my family goings on the listener tried to buy podcast rights. And that's just the navel gazing stuff.

mjec @mjec.net · 28/05/2026

I was about to talk about how I'm not here much anymore because it's not great for my mental health, but I got distracted by reports the US is taking steps towards invading Cuba. So case in point.

It is really bothering me that two days ago in a throwaway comment on reddit, made while high, I called something an objective test when I meant to call it a non-discretionary standard. But it's probably fine right?

It is so depressing watching everything previous generations fought and died for be dismantled piece by piece. These basic protections and institutions, while imperfect, still pushed in the right direction. We are failing future generations and leaving a worse world behind for them.

I think most of who have worked in writing or entertainment know that piracy is a fact of life, and has been for a long time now. But there’s a difference between a broke student downloading a PDF of your book, and a multibillion dollar company stealing your work for its own bullshit purposes.

It also lacks a concept of scratch files; everything has to have a name and location before you can edit it. You can fake it, if you try hard. Honestly the best thing I've used has been a vscode profile, but that's best always open on a relatively powerful machine
