A new species of extinct crocodile from Egypt has been discovered, sharing more than just its home with the Great Sphinx. Herugavialis cairensis was found in the very same rocks used to build the icon...

Adaptive radiations generate remarkable morphological diversity, yet traits often diversify at different rates and modes, producing mosaic patterns of evolution. Modularity, the semiautonomous organization of traits, can shape how selection and ...

Abstract. While genomic data are powerfully informative for phylogenetic inference, traditional sequence-based analyses can be confounded by issues like ho

A comprehensive reference to the gobioid fishes of North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Blue suckers [Cycleptus elongatus (Lesueur, 1817)] are declining in much of their native range, and recent research suggests they may be longer lived than previously estimated. We compared pectoral fi...

A Yale-led study describing a new Southern cavefish species provides strong evidence that new species can arise in organisms adapted to live only underground.

Abstract. Time-calibrating a phylogenetic tree is a fundamental step in phylogenetic inference, as it allows the study of macroevolutionary processes such

The Navajini is a clade of Neotropical electric fishes specialized to inhabit deep river channels in the lowland Amazonian, with species that exhibit high craniofacial disparity and a highly conservat...

First-of-its kind sighting expands knowledge about elusive sharks , and underlines importance of the Canary Islands’ deep water habitats

Antarctic icefish are famous for living without red blood cells, but they are not alone. A species of needle-shaped, warm-water fish called the Asian noodlefish also lacks hemoglobin and red blood cel...

Imaging of a Devonian jawless fish reveals advanced features previously thought to be exclusive to jawed vertebrates, challenging the idea that jaws were the primary driver for the evolution of d...
