Raquel Krempel discusses her work aiming to better understand aphantasic experience. This draws on studies she conducted (w/ collaborators) that compared aphantasics and controls when they were asked to describe their experiences trying to imagine and trying to remember something.

This is not equivalent to the underdetermination of perceptual content relative to the non-conscious information that is registered by way of proximal stimulations of retinal receptors in the form of 2-dimensional (sensory) light arrays.

The problem of perceptual presence is couched firmly at the phenomenological level at the supposed 'inadequecy' of what is explicitly give in perception to the overall sense of the perception

Jonathan Mitchell @mitchellphilosophy.bsky.social · 28/11/2024
'[A] major part of this problem is to explain the transformation of the registration of light intensities on retinal receptors – a two-dimensional array – into perceptual representation of, and as of, entities in three-dimensional space.'

That's interesting. I'll be sure to take a look over this material again (since I'm writing a book on it!). I do think there is a difference though between what's usually called the 'underdetermination problem' in perceptual psychology and the 'problem of perceptual presence' in philosophy.
110
Jonathan Mitchell @mitchellphilosophy.bsky.social · 28/11/2024
For sure: I'm not sure that perception occuring over time gets us all that much as a solution to how we perceive 3-dimensional objects as complete things with occluded parts. Talks of 'changing arrays' to my ear also sounds a little bit more like visual system talk, but that might just be me!
100
Jonathan Mitchell @mitchellphilosophy.bsky.social · 28/11/2024
I'd also probably think that Gibson's account wouldn't be pitched a solution specifically to the phenomenological problem/puzzle I'm interested in and he's more concerned with a question concerning the construction of '3 dimensional form' at the level of the visual system.
110
Jonathan Mitchell @mitchellphilosophy.bsky.social · 28/11/2024
I'm not that familiar with Gibson's response, although there are aspects of his 'ecological view' that as present (earlier) in Husserl and in Alva Noe. The idea is roughly that patterns of 'kinaesthesis' (forms of bodily awareness) are essential to 'the sense of presence' of perceptual objects.
