Very happy to say I have just started a new position as early-career researcher at RUB Bochum University @ruhr-uni-bochum.de! Sad to leave @uonphilosophy.bsky.social and the UK, but looking forward to potentially 6 years of job security in a great place for mind and cognition research.

As you're probably tired of hearing, I have a new book out on 8th September that'll be in all good book stores, aimed at a wider audience, on the history of smell (yalebooks.co.uk/book/9780300...). If you have a fun podcast and you'd like to do an episode with me or invite me on I'd love to chat.

It's new paper time! As usual, I have many thoughts about the topic and very little clue of what I'll end up arguing. Is this weird or do other philosophers feel the same? #philosophy

This is fun!
But now to our question. Here is a perceived-object
describable as converging railway-tracks. Where does this
object exist? Not along the actual right of way; those
tracks were laid and remain parallel. Not where the real
train is to run; certainly one would dislike being on a train
that had to run over converging tracks. Where then ? We
are not told.
Or take the well-known drab tree seen by the colour-blind
man. It is as real to him as our green trees are to us. But
surely the 'real' tree is not drab. Where then does this
drab tree find room to exist-with space already filled by
green trees, and other objects ? It has a name ('perceived-
tree') kindly provided by the committee on definitions, but
it has no local habitation.

Realised this is the first time where I'm organising a 2-day event entirely on my own, and I'm personally feeling responsible for the well-being of 15 people starting now until probably once I know they got their trains/flights back 🫠

In Italy I lived in a house with routinely 35 degrees inside for weeks in a row. My tip: take showers and put your clothes on without drying yourself, then when your hair is dry make it wet again under the sink, continuously. Generally, lie on the floor while wet and hate the whole thing.

Tuner is good: funny, cute characters, and uniquely centring hyperacusis. And boy will you hear some sounds! Metallic, piercing, overwhelming sounds - besides much piano. I liked this, it helps get a sense of a condition which spellcheck still doesn't recognise. (1) #perception #senses #hyperacusis

Dawes Hicks quote of the day (1912). A little argument against Russell (spoiler: it's a good one!):
Suppose, for the sake of argument, that colour is inherent in the table, suppose the table has in reality a specific colour. Then, surely, there would be nothing to conflict with this supposition in the fact that such real colour will present a different aspect if another colour be reflected upon it, or if a blue pair of spectacles intervene between it and the observer, or if it be enveloped in darkness rather than in daylight. The reasoning would only be valid on the assumption that if the table is really coloured, the real colour must appear the same in darkness and in daylight, through a pair of blue spectacles and without them, in artificial light and in the sun's light,-an assumption extremely improbable, to say the least of it, and for which there is absolutely no warrant.

Dawes Hicks quote of the day (1913):
Experience does not advance by a gradual building up of the concrete objects of perception from originally isolated and detached sensibilia. We do not start with the apprehension of innumerable patches of colour, with visual presentations of form and of magnitude, with tactual presentations of hardness, smoothness, and the like, and out of such definite appearances construct the complexes which are designated ‘things’.
