Spent some time this weekend finally finishing up the 1/2500 scale Allies and Adversaries set by #PolarLights. All that remained was the Keldon and Defiant! Yes, they're all to scale. Bonus picture of the AMT 1/720 kit to get a 2x2 post. #startrek #AMT #modelkit #modelmaking #scalemodel

The large LCARS display behind the transporter console on #StarTrekTNG will be changed between seasons 5 and 6, but between seasons 4 ("Redemption I"⬇️) and season 5 ("Darmok"⬆️), the only change is an added red label at the bottom left under the display.

The way the dialogue was written in the TNG/DS9/VOY era. It sometimes gets criticised as being flat and fake, but to my undiagnosed autistic young mind having characters calmly and clearly articulating issues and even emotions was SO helpful, I had no idea.

LCARS graphic from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION "Contagion" (1989) as cover art for STAR TREK SCIENCE LOGS by André Bormanis (1998)
LCARS diagnostic screen from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION "Contagion" used as cover art for STAR TREK SCIENCE LOGS by André Bormanis.

Michael and Denise Okuda were largely respinsible for creating the iconic backlit and video playback graphics throughout the STAR TREK franchise from STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME through STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE. In a joint interview, the Okudas said that the LCARS visual language was intended to suggest organization without a predefined or specific functionality: "The TNG panel graphics are intended to suggest something well-organized when a viewer sees them in the background of a scene. My advantage, of course, is that they are seldom seen closely, so I rarely have to take the time to figure out a panel in exact detail. As long as it looks credible on camera, I'm okay. This is extremely valuable, because it could easily require ten or fifty times as much time (and therefore labor and money) if I had to have all of the panels done in that kind of detail. The problem with actual software implementations of the style is that it requires far more than simply mimicking the colors and patterns. In order to work well, one has to analyze the tasks and the users' needs in great detail. This is something that the software industry in general does poorly, in my opinion. One also sees the same kinds of issues in things that should be well-understood, like VCR controls and TV remotes. They are all elegantly designed, but the users' needs are seldom adequately anticipated. On the show, I have the advantage that the viewer can assume that I've anticipated the crew's needs, simply because you can see how easy it is for the actors to use the controls."

"Two-thirds of planned datacentres in the US are in drought-stricken areas." I start the week with this facepalm-worthy piece of news. 🫪
What is certain, though, is that the land cannot withstand these centres’ immense demand for water. According to analysis by the Guardian, two-thirds of planned datacentres in the US are in drought-stricken areas. The larger centres need up to 5m gallons of water a day for cooling, equivalent to the average usage of 50,000 people. It is unclear what the plan is and whose needs will take priority between AI, agriculture and everyone else.

Four-foot Enterprise-D filming model, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (1993)
Underneath the saucer looking at the deflector and warp nacelles of the four-foot Enterprise-D filming model.

Photo by Eric Alba, then a Visual Effects Artist on STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION and STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE.

Famously, the four-foot Enterprise-D model was commissioned between STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION Seasons Two and Three. According to Dan Curry, the decision to build the smaller model came down to a perceived lack of detail on the original six-foot miniature and because its size made it difficult to work with: "We had the six-footer and we also had the two-footer, and something that must have intellectually interesting to Andy was the idea of this perfectly smooth ship that was absolutely huge, and if you saw it in person the scale would be rapidly apparent. But when we photographed the big ship very smooth, we couldn't tell the difference between it and a very small ship very smooth, because photographically, particularly on television and in order to create that sense of scale and hugeness, we needed three-dimensional relief, something to cast shadows. That's why we built the four-footer. And also because the six-footer was really too big to be manageable, particularly when we shot matte passes, where you have enough lit cared behind the ship to obtain a silhouette. (...) So if you had a big move going around it, it would sometimes take a day to get the matte pass because the ship was so huge. And the four-footer turned out to be a more manageable size."
