finally, wry neck = hanging day. The hanged individual (but surely male here, though NB the notorious Moll Flanders who cross-dressed but wasn't hanged) had a 'wry mouth and pissen (pair of) britches'

Think is penis, because 'lead apes in hell' ('ape-carrier') = an old maid, a trad. slang. dildo fan.

My first thought is line 1, which is a 'live' use of a phr. I have rarely seen outside dicts. Would you have chapter and verse for your text? As for handle=penis. Did a jakes actually have a handle. They were created 1596 so maybe lit. But could be for the door?

Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.

I don’t know the chapter and verse (though I would love to have it) but he was definitely not alone:
The scan of the entry for ‘love muscle’ as listed in Green's Dictionary of Slang. Two senses, the first of which is the penis and offers citations from 1958-2024. The second is a New Zealand prison term, depicting a vain inmate obsessed with his appearance.

Gary’s dictionary, which I have been allowed to incorporate where useful into GDoS (took me a year) mixes slang and SE, SAmE, SAusE. And his focus was very much on matters gay. Used a lot of porn and personal ads like that.

Well, Gary Simes has this quote - homophobic or hetero-ditto? - in his unpub. DLSS: a personal ad in the gay weekly Sydney Star Obs (Aug. 1999): ‘Balaclava hooded straight boy wants his leather tight buns worshipped by poofs. Beg him to strip — feed you his hairy pussy.’

As for visits, we'd pick up my father on Sat. evening and help him lug sacks of farthings (etc) to the bank's nearby night safe. Went back 50 yrs later to do a lit fest. Very strange experience. My dame school was on its last day (I cldn't resist a visit), the old house was smaller. Usual stuff.

Lincoln. Two Jewish families. Plus my prep school (in Woodhall Spa, home of the Dam Busters - I remember them making the movie) had a school song based on a major local blood libel c. 1200, that of matza fodder, 'Little St Hugh'. Which name conveniently rhymes with... WTF?! thought 10-yr-old moi.

My father was an M&S manager. I recall something called 'sandwich spread'. Not a good OMG now, though at the time I lapped it up. (Looked like outside the pub late Sat. nite.) OTOH his store (demographically selected for such launches) introduced fruit yoghurts and avocados to the mass mart c. 1960.

Lost smell and taste (not a good idea when living in France). Didn't consciously have covid but everyone assures me that would have been the cause. I'm surprisingly philosophical - I've had much good food and drink over the years - but it’s all down to texture now and that has serious limits.
