bright pink orchids / zuigetsu ikeda / 1877 - 1944. Japan
Unfurling in vibrant, tropical splendor against a quiet slate-grey ground, these twin Cattleya orchids showcase the masterly botanical draftsmanship of Ikeda Zuigetsu (1877–1944). Rendered in delicate woodblock printing (mokuhan-ga), the composition centers on two full, undulating blooms suspended on a slender stalk. Soft pink sepals give way to dramatic, ruffled labellums (lips) dyed in deep, saturated crimson-magenta, their inner throats marked with intricate golden-yellow striations. Below, crisp emerald leaves and paper-dry pseudobulb sheaths anchor the living plant, their textures meticulously delineated by fine, sharp contours and delicate tonal washes (bokashi).

Ikeda Zuigetsu occupies a singular position in early 20th-century Japanese graphic art, celebrated for bridging classical kachō-ga (bird-and-flower art) with the exacting demands of modern botanical illustration (shasei). During the Taishō and early Shōwa eras, as exotic Western flora gained immense popularity among Japanese collectors and horticulturists, Zuigetsu produced comprehensive portfolio series dedicated to orchids (Ran). His technique relied on extraordinary woodblock precision, using multiple carved blocks to achieve seamless color gradients on the ruffled petals while preserving the flat, graphic elegance inherent to traditional Japanese print culture.

Uemura Shōen, 1948 Snowy Day, Yamatane Museum of Art. As the first female artist to be awarded Japan's prestigious Order of Culture, Shōen revolutionized the genre by rejecting superficial idealization in favor of depicting women endowed with quiet dignity, intelligence, and inner fortitude.
Uemura Shōen’s Snowy Day, housed in the Yamatane Museum of Art, stands as a transcendent masterpiece of modern Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and bijinga (paintings of beautiful women). As the first female artist to be awarded Japan's prestigious Order of Culture, Shōen revolutionized the genre by rejecting superficial idealization in favor of depicting women endowed with quiet dignity, intelligence, and inner fortitude. In this atmospheric portrait, a young woman pauses amid a gentle winter snowfall, her posture subtly pulled inward against the chill as soft white flakes drift through the warm, neutral silk background.

The work is a exquisite masterclass in the rendering of early 20th-century seasonal attire and material culture. The figure is wrapped in a vibrant cerulean blue winter garment, over which a soft, dusty-pink hood lined with a pale seafoam ruffle is draped to guard her hair against the damp snow. Beneath her outer coat, Shōen details a crisp white under-collar (han'eri) embroidered with delicate botanical motifs, paired with an obi featuring a rich kanoko shibori (dappled tie-dye) technique in deep forest green and crimson. Her nihongami coiffure is adorned with a gilded fan-shaped comb, red and white silk ribboning, and delicate white plum blossom (ume) kanzashi hairpins with dangling golden accents that catch the faint winter light.

Technically, the painting highlights Shōen’s legendary line work (senba) and refined use of natural mineral pigments (iwanoguba) on silk. The smooth, porcelain clarity of the figure's skin and the deep, ink-black warmth of her hair stand in striking equilibrium against the cool tones of her winter layers. By capturing both the intricate textures of fine textiles and the introspective mood of a quiet, snow-dusted moment, Snowy Day epitomizes Shōen’s lifelong devotion to elevating the representation of Japanese women into an enduring ideal of grace and composure.

It is a coincidence that 'emoji' and 'emoticon' sound alike. 'Emoji' is a Japanese term meaning 'pictograph.' 'e' is "picture, drawing" + 'moji' is “letter, character” 'Emoticon' is 'emotion' + 'icon.'

Today's morning linguistic thought is whether Anne Boleyn's dog can offer evidence for dating French sound changes – the dog was called Purkoy (from pourquoi 'why'), and I wonder how that English OY spelling from 1534 fits into the change of French OI into its modern sound /wa/.

Congratulations ! You have reached the Woodpigeon of encouragement. Great job! Keep going! 📷️ @carlbovisnature.bsky.social
A delighted-looking Woodpigeon perches among frothy white blossom, its soft grey-blue head tilted and bright pale eye wide with excitement. Its beak is open mid-call, clutching a petal or piece of blossom, adding to the wonderfully animated expression. The bird’s warm pink chest and distinctive white neck patch stand out against the blurred spring branches, giving the impression of a pigeon caught in an enthusiastic, blossom-fuelled pep talk.
