Yesterday's govt. voter suppression tactic affects hundreds of thousands of Kiwis, and will unduly impact young folks, Asians, Māori, Pacific. But it also impacts anyone who is moving, about to turn 18 in the days before voting day etc. What's true is "If the Left Vote, The Left Win" #nzpol

“Strain on the system.” SYBAU Mr. Goldsmith. People wanting to vote is strain? Franchise comes before democracy itself. If there’s strain - that means more people want to vote. How can that be spun as a bad thing? Fund it. Employ for it. The last thing you should be doing is restricting it. #nzpol

If you’re not allowed to enrol to vote after advanced voting has begun, surely the parties shouldn’t be allowed to campaign either? A lot can happen in the last two weeks before election day, and what about those waiting in line after the polls close? Are they also drop-kicks? #nzpol

I found the links below super helpful in making a submission against the Regulatory Standards Bill. #nzpol My comments attached, make your own at www.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/mak...
My/our comments: I strongly oppose the Regulatory Standards Bill being passed. In my opinion the Regulatory Standards Bill fundamentally breaches Te Tiriti o Waitangi and undermines the Treaty Principles of tino rangatiratanga and partnership. Excluding Maori from regulatory decision-making undermines the principle of partnership enshrined in Te Tiriti, and forcing all legislation to consider the economic principles included in this bill disenfranchises all citizens and residents of Aotearoa New Zealand while prioritizing the voices of industry and the wealthy. The Regulatory Standards Bill centralises minoritarian power in the hands of David Seymour and the ACT party, while diminishing the role of Parliament and the voices of all New Zealanders. Finally, The Regulatory Standards Bill will facilitate the exploitation of natural resources at the expense of our beautiful natural environment by weakening environmental protections, and accelerating the loss of endangered species.

My/our recommendations: I strongly recommend that the committee not put the Regulatory Standards Bill forward to the full Parliament. Kill the bill!

This granny-flats policy just represents that NACT1st believes in landlords providing sub-par housing. “Oh but the building code…” is a minimum, not a standard. It’s firefighting housing demand to inflate asset portfolios. #nzpol

Interesting how Meager is criticising Labour’s voting record in the committee proceedings when it was his government that voted for the TPB to pass first reading. This government can’t decide if it wants to reduce waste or not, time/money - and can’t decide if it wants democracy or not. #nzpol

If I accounted as creatively as #NickyNoBoats - surely this counts as public asset sales. Not denying Uni’s don’t price gouge rents, but a public institution selling assets for revenue to balance the books is unsustainable. Maybe fund our education? Invest in better in our future workforce? #NZPol

Fair enough, thank you and will do! It’s such a four-wheeled tricycle to understand. My concern is more surrounding the spending cuts being justified as a means to reduce debt whether nominally or really, yet I’m not convinced I’ve seen this in current policy.

Kia Ora! I’ll work my way through it. Yeah of course, just wary the boogeyman of debt that is harped on about (by both sides) is not then addressed in real as opposed to nominal terms. Just trying to see beyond the easily digestible justification for the current “spending” cuts. Thanks!

Does anyone know how to find where public debt repayments (to the RBNZ or otherwise) are recorded? Trying to gauge whether the government is committed to reducing debt i.e increasing payments ahead of inflation, or relying on growth to balance books in terms of debt/GDP ratio. TIA #nzpol

‘Great danger’ to South Korea unless President Yoon suspended, says ruling party leader
Head of the People Power party claims there is a significant risk that president could order ‘extreme actions’ The South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, could put citizens in “great danger” if he is not suspended, the head of the ruling party said on Friday, increasing the likelihood that parliament will vote to impeach Yoon over Tuesday’s failed martial law declaration. “[If] President Yoon continues to hold the office of the presidency, there is a significant risk that extreme actions similar to the martial law declaration could be repeated, which could put the Republic of Korea and its citizens in great danger,” the head of the People Power party, Han Dong-hoon, told an emergency party leadership meeting.
