Ed Miliband's critics have said he was wrong to impose sanctions ahead of Israel's elections. These are the same elections Arab parties are set to be barred from standing in. Justice deferred is justice denied. Ed was right.

Whether it's hotels, detention centres or charter flights, border securitisation always leads to private companies profiting from devastation. It costs far less to support and integrate people than it does to imprison or deport them, and would mean fewer lives ruined, more valued and flourishing.

Every day this week we have seen hundreds of masked fascist men protesting at our ports, with next-to-no state response. They claim to be the "protectors of women and girls", but won't bat an eyelid to perpetrators in their own ranks. Where is Nigel Farage or Tommy Robinson's outrage at this news?

This is yet another horrific consequence of the hostile environment, which normalises fear, exploitation and precarity and denies people the safety net society should provide. This is the Home Office failing to protect some of the most vulnerable people in our society to placate far-right mobs.

Today's sanctions against Israel's occupation is very welcome. For too long, diplomacy has been determined by power rather than justice, with illegality left unchallenged. 11 other nations will implement the same sanctions. May this begin a new international consensus centred on peace and justice.

Wales's Senedd made it a criminal offence for politicians to lie. How quickly would Farage resign if our Parliament did the same?

The Labour Party gave Starmer everything. It made him an MP, and then PM. He had to resign as PM due to his inability to lead the country. Inflicting the chaos of a by-election on the day his successor first addresses the Commons is deeply petty. A final reminder of how unworthy he was as PM.

Bad landlords selling up and homes being bought - by families, councils, or landlords willing to maintain their properties - isn't policy failure; it's the Renters' Rights Act succeeding. Now give Mayors the power to introduce rent controls too.

I see Ann Widdecombe has died. When she was Home Secretary I showed her round Drake Hall womens’s prison. There was a pregnant woman on a bed in the early stages of Labour and she asked the prison officers why she wasn’t handcuffed to the bed. That’s the kind of woman she was.

Farage says this by-election is about taking on "the establishment". On the same day, Barnsley's Reform council has cut school uniform grants. Apparently "the establishment" means working-class kids - not his crypto-billionaire mates.

Back in April, Keir Starmer condemned the Tory government for having left him "uncosted and undeliverable" investment plans. He's now left a future PM with a £4.7bn budget gap. In New York, Mamdani closed an inherited $12bn budget deficit through a tax on luxury homes. We can and must do the same.

Research study by @sheffieldhallamuni.bsky.social into the impact of pavement parking ✅ Age 18+ ✅ Live in South Yorkshire ✅Walk or wheel (mobility aid or push chair) regularly More info in images/AltText Sign up at tinyurl.com/SYpavementpa...
Research: Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University have asked us to share this information about a study they are conducting:

Do you encounter pavement parking while walking/wheeling? Join our study to share how it impacts you.

What does taking part involve?
You will be joined by a researcher for one of your regular walking or wheeling journeys. You will discuss the impact of pavement parking and obstructions in the environment on your mobility and wellbeing.

Am I eligible to take part?
You will need to be aged over 18, based in South Yorkshire, and walk or wheel (use a mobility aid or pram) regularly. We are especially interested in talking to those facing barriers to getting around.

Why is this study being done?
Walking and wheeling are fundamental ways for people to get around, access services, and get some exercise. We want to understand the impact of pavement parking on people's abilities to undertake everyday walking and wheeling journeys safely.

Who is conducting the study?

Globally, SUVs produce more CO2 than most individual countries. As cars get heavier they're also wearing down our roads more quickly. London and Paris are looking to charge higher costs to their drivers to mitigate their damage. Sheffield should be given the same power to do so too.

Half of Rotherham's riot arrests had already been reported for domestic abuse – is enough being done to de-escalate before violence occurs?

The Grenfell tower fire was criminal because it was entirely preventable. 72 people were killed by deregulation and institutional neglect. This is a monstrous thing to say. It also exposes something we have said for years: those who push deregulation know it kills - they just don't care.

Labour have come third in a seat we have represented for the best part of a hundred years. This is the clearest rejection of the leadership yet - and its rightward turn, smear campaigns, and spiteful blocking of Burnham. Starmer must resign or be removed today, or else risk our permanent collapse.

Drug decriminalisation is backed by public health evidence and harm-reduction principles. For a party of government to share something so deliberately inflammatory is not just irresponsible, but really dangerous. Policy should be driven by evidence, not fear-mongering.
021
Cllr Minesh Parekh 🌹 @mineshparekh.bsky.social · 09/02/2026
Our collapse in support is a direct consequence of Starmerism sidelining members, hollowing out our internal democracy, and creating a political culture predisposed to scandal. We need a decisive break from Starmerism and Starmer to have any chance of salvaging the remainder of this Parliament.

Andrew Gwynne stood down following his suspension from the party after anti-Semitic, misogynistic, and racist comments he made in a chat named “Trigger Me Timbers”. This is a direct result of that toxic factionalism. The chat name itself makes light of the idea of member-led accountability.

Cllr Minesh Parekh 🌹 @mineshparekh.bsky.social · 09/02/2026
But we should also remember why this by-election is even taking place. For years we were told centrally-managed selections would deliver “high quality candidates". In reality, this was an excuse to entrench a toxic political culture fundamentally opposed to democratic accountability.
