When you take a transit vehicle with strangers, there is an inherent trust you're giving to one another. That trust in each other is so essential to the health of our larger society and our democracy.

When we start to drive people away and send messages that that shared space is not a place to be, you're going to see our institutions and our societal structures start to dismantle. I believe in CTA not just for Chicago, but really for our country.

Sorry to be a hater but the fact you need to wake up super early on a Sunday (and pay a fee) to enjoy a car-free DLSD is a sick joke. If you get there at 9, you have 90 minutes before rolling closures begin. G-d forbid drivers are inconvenienced. ATA has been content with scraps for 25 years.

The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled Riley O’Neil’s death an “accident” but in every way it was the result of specific policy and infrastructure choices made by the city. Besides being an indispensable colleague that’s what makes me so endlessly angry.

May 4th will mark 140 years since the Haymarket Affair, a watershed moment in the American labor movement. Haymarket Square, which had been a gathering place for a century, was effectively obliterated in the late 1950s by the construction of the Kennedy Expressway. Before-and-after below.
