and one of the most important conversations that i wish would would happen more often is about zinester economics, from copy scams to making financially accessible artist book-type objects, distro, etc.

A different year at MZF someone did a "no carve" print block making wkshp for kids using foam trays - I also like foamcore for this I've also learned about GOCCO printing, cartoneras and basic hand sewn binding at wkshps at various zine fests

I gave a talk at the 2011 London Queer Zine Symposium about HIV/AIDS zines of the 80s and 90s. A friend led a show-and-tell/conversation about women's sexual health zines at a Milwaukee Zine Fest one year

i was penpals with some cute punk boy who i no longer remember. he lived in Ashville at the time, and I used to send him copies that he would put out in his local queer bookshop and cafes. all set up via the long-lost queerpunk email list.

When I was publishing Mutate (1999-2008) I released it as a free zine, and asked that if folks ordered it from me via mail or from my web site that they send 3 stamps for it It was 2 stamps to mail, and i'd use the 3rd to send copies to folks for review or as contributor copies, zine trades, etc.

my fave BNS soup the past year or so was to cube it up along with a bunch of carrots and roast it with shallots and garlic for an hour or so, until it starts to caramelize. cool for a bit and put in the blender with veg stock, transfer to a pot with a little more stock, and boil then simmer for 20.

I was the IT manager at our local food co-op, hired in 1999 to mitigate the Y2K problems that were expected. Which ultimately involved sleeping overnight in the store and helping the vendor patch the UNIX machine that ran the registers. SCO imploded more than Y2K ever did.

NEVER FORGET!!! On this day in 1973 the Arch Cafe in Springfield, MA was firebombed and destroyed.

Early Tuesday morning (Sept. 11) at 5AM, one of Springfield’s gay “hangouts”, the Arch Cafe was completely demolished by a bomb explosion. Owner Louis Lake had received an unusual number of obscene phone calls, as many as “12 to 15 daily prior to today’s mishap. Lake said, “You’ve got to expect a certain number of calls, mostly from straight people who object (to homosexuality.)

Lake estimated damages at between eighty and ninety thousand dollars, and said that his insurance would “in no way” cover losses.

State police bomb squads are said to be investigating the source of the explosion and witnesses reported the smell of flammable fuel permeating the rubble in one section of the bar. Firemen suspected bombing after they combed through the debris and found the gas main and meter servicing the building intact. A fire inspector, when asked if the blast was the work of an explosives ex-pert, said “if it wasn’t, it sure as hell was a good amateur”.

Several residents of the neighboring Charles Hotel, mostly elderly people, were knocked from their beds by the blast. Authorities said that some of the occupants were shaken but there were no injuries. The bar was unoccupied at the time.

GCN contacted Rep. James Boller (D., Springfield) at the State House. He remarked upon viewing the wreckage Wednesday morning, that the former Arch Cafe was “completely demolished”, and that both adjacent buildings had also experienced damage. When questioned on the perpetrator of this act and his possible exper-tise, he remarked that a pro
“could not have done such a good job’. He labeled it a “fool-ish’ act done by some “wierd” person whose motivation “could have been anything, an argument or something”

Boller added that they “knew what they were doing” , implying that the bomber was taking deliberate action against the gay com-munity.
