It turns out that this horrible week is a very good moment to re-read Virginia Woolf on the life & death of Mary Wollstonecraft & MW's passionate hatred of tyranny. Here's how Woolf's essay (from The Common Reader, 2d series) ends. It takes my breath away. #18thc
She died in child-birth. She whose sense of her own existence was so intense, who had cried out even in her misery, 'I cannot bear to think of being no more--of losing myself--nay, it appears to me impossible that I should cease to exist', died at the age of 36. But she has her revenge. Many millions have died and been forgotten in the 130 years that have passed since she was buried; and yet as we reader her letters and listen to her arguments and consider her experiments, above all, that most fruitful experiment, her relation with Godwin, and realize the high-handed and hot-blooded manner in which she cut her way to the quick of life, one form of immortality is hers undoubtedly: she is alive and active, she argues and experiments, we hear her voice and trace her influence even now among the living.

don't say you consumed art unless you literally chewed and swallowed that's stolen valor
A little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children's letters–sometimes very hastily–but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, "Dear Jim: I loved your card." Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said: "Jim loved your card so much he ate it." That to me was one of the highest compliments I've ever received. He didn't care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.[21]

Don’t ask me. My @smh @theage cartoon.
Six frames. 1. Fellow with clipboard bails up woman passer-by, says, “Excuse me, I’m doing a short survey. Do you think Australia takes in too many immigrants?” 2. She says,”I don’t know. I mean, are we talking about the immigrants who look after my mother in the aged care home?” 3. She continues: “Or the ones who come here to pick fruit for low wages so we have affordable fresh produce?” 4. “Or the ones working in construction to build our housing and infrastructure?” 5. “Or those training to be the medical specialists were short of?” 6. “I really don’t know. Maybe you could ask the government. They should know.”

It is just like a battery. A battery has two ends: a positive end and a negative end. Let's look at how that works.
Parts of a Battery
• Cathode: This is the positive end. It pulls things in. Think of it like a magnet grabbing tiny metal bits.
• Anode: This is the negative end. It pushes things out. Think of it like a crowded room pushing people out the door.

Screenshot of the article's graphic, showing color swatches derived from the Earthcam archive, illustration the color of the reflecting pool calibrated against satellite imagery, from 8 June to 19 June 2026. As I mentioned in this piece, I sometimes pop work or questions I've already completed into a chatbot to see what type of results it returns (less now bc I think the Q is answered) check out the emissions intensities Claude returns for coal and gas (~50% of actual) newrepublic.com/article/2076...
Coal 75 terawatt hours
gas 190 terawatt hours

Convert to mtco2-e

12:08 PM
Here are the conversions to MtCO₂-e:

Fuel	Energy	Emission Factor	MtCO₂-e
Coal	75 TWh	~0.34 kg CO₂/kWh (thermal)	~25.5 MtCO₂-e
Gas	190 TWh	~0.20 kg CO₂/kWh (thermal)	~38.0 MtCO₂-e
Total	265 TWh ~63.5 MtCO₂-e
Assumptions:

These are combustion emissions using standard IPCC/IEA emission factors for electricity generation:
Coal: ~340 g CO₂/kWh (sub-bituminous average)
Gas: ~200 g CO₂/kWh (natural gas combined cycle)
CO₂-equivalent here is essentially CO₂ (methane upstream emissions not included)
If you want I can adjust for upstream/fugitive emissions (especially relevant for gas), use a different coal grade (lignite is higher ~400 g/kWh, anthracite similar), or apply country-specific grid factors.

9. It wouldn’t be awful to tell X, Meta, Google & company to tidy their damn room. ”Move fast and break things” is bullshit, and a government that visibly quails at enforcing existing law on large companies - let alone creating new law to regulate new situations - is sending a message that sucks.

When you write a book you actually write several books. There's the one you know you wrote. Then there's the one your readers bring their experiences to. This is a big part of the magic. As soon as it goes out into the world, your book multiplies & becomes many versions of itself, all equally valid.
