Junior making a 1:00 visit. Started out getting snacks off the ground then hopped up on the snack table for more from the bowl. Then, of course, off to get a drink. 🪶 roadrunner
A roadrunner entered the yard and came up to a backyard patio. The bird looks expectedly at the camera hoping for mealworms After snacks, the roadrunner leaves the patio to get a drink of water from a clay bowl in the yard.

From the Fort Worth Zoo: Raani the Indian gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) admires her baby, newly hatched. The Fort Worth Zoo had 8 (!) babies hatch this season. The population of these critically endangered crocs is less than 1000 globally, so every hatchling matters. (📷: Fort Worth Zoo)
From a 2023 Facebook post by the Fort Worth Zoo:
"HISTORY IS MADE🚨
The Zoo is thrilled to announce this monumental conservation success - the hatchings of four critically endangered gharial crocodiles. The Fort Worth Zoo is the only institution in the United States to have produced multiple offspring of this critically endangered species. (To date, only one other institution has produced a single offspring in 2016.) In the wild, it is estimated that only about 200 reproducing adults remain. We are so proud of our ectotherms team for this historic achievement!"

Pretty sure this is Junior. Hanging out for 30 minutes - so far. 1- grooming itchy feathers 2- so much floof 3- “anything in this clump of native grass?” 4- “can someone help scratch this itch?” 🪶🌿 roadrunner
A roadrunner is standing in a corner of the yard in the shade. The bird is grooming its feathers, might be molting and getting new itchy feathers. The roadrunner has fluffed up its belly feathers so the bird looks twice as big. The roadrunner has jumped into a large clump of native grass facing away from the camera. The bird has good camouflage in the shadows. The roadrunner is reaching around with its beak to groom near the base of its tail feathers.

The first panel shows a brain. The brain is saying "I'm 30 and YOUNG! I only recently fully developed!"
The second panel shows a heart. The heart says "I hear ya! I can keep going for DECADES more!"
The third panel shows a spine's face. It weakly says, "I am old".
We zoom out and the spine is using a walker. It continues, "so very old".

Two young female hooded orioles are seen on and near backyard feeders. A large green shrub is behind them.

This ancient Egyptian bronze of a mother cat nursing her kittens is a scene which feels instantly familiar thousands of years later! 🐈‍⬛ 🐾😍 The cat represents the ancient Egyptian goddess Bastet in her role as protector of mothers and children. 📷 Brooklyn Museum #Caturday #Archaeology
This Brooklyn Musem image shows a small bronze group of a mother cat and four kittens set on bronze base, which is in turn set on a wooden base. The mother cat is reclining on her left side with legs outstretched and her head at right. Her left fore and hind legs lie forward while her right fore and hind legs are drawn back. Her tail is draped over her right hind leg. Her head is upright perhaps tilted back slightly as one of the kittens, set between her forelegs, playfully climbs toward her neck. The next three kittens are being nursed by the mother cat. Two are between her fore and hind legs, the last is between the cat's tail and left foreleg. Mother cat wears a necklace which is indicated by an incised line running around her neck. On the front of the bronze base toward the right side (below the cat's left paw) is an inscription ‘Bastet, given life’, showing that the cat represents the goddess fulfilling one of her roles as protector of women and children. Dated circa 664-30 BC, Dynasty 26 or later. Said to come from Saqqara. The museum gives the dimensions as 6.1 x 8.8 x 5 cm.

Given rising interest in the rapidly strengthening El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean, I've created a one-page fact sheet succinctly describing what El Niño is, this year's (remarkable) forecast, and potential impacts from California to global scales. [Thread]
JPEG version of a 1-page Factsheet: El Niño 2026-2027: A Potentially Historic Global Climate Event
By Daniel Swain, PhD | August 2026

There is a banner image depicting projected warming of the Pacific Ocean by early winter.

The content begins:
"What is El Niño?
El Niño is the warm phase of a natural cycle, known as El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), that occurs roughly every 2-7 years in the tropical Pacific Ocean. During El Niño events, the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean warms to well above typical levels. El Niño directly affects local climate in the countries closest to the unusually warm ocean waters, but can also indirectly influence the climate of distant regions thousands of miles away. During the strongest events, El Niño can profoundly affect climate even on global scales, causing temporary planetary warming and disrupting large-scale precipitation patterns..."

The second panel shows a dog wagging its tail. There is a speech bubble leading back to Sarah saying "It squeaks!"
The title above the last two panels reads, "Cat Toys".
In panel three we see Sarah again. She says "Come, child."
Panel four shows a cat raising its paws in glee. We see Sarah's hands holding cat nip. We see a speech bubble leading back to Sarah saying "It is time to do drugs".

Hummingbirds.
A four panel comic. In panel 1, a rufous hummingbird flies down toward a large hummingbird feeder with as many as 6 holes on top. He thinks "The humans put up a new feeder!" In panel 2, he lands on the feeder and gazes down at it. He thinks "It's huge. Many of us could feed here at once." In panel 3, we see a close up view of the hummingbird, and he's thinking "This could end the ancient rivalries. Usher in an era of peace. Interesting." In panel 4, an Anna's hummingbird hovers over the feeder and says "Hey, can I have some necta-" and the rufous hummingbird says "No."
