Very grateful that Powys/the Welsh Government decided a year ago to provide Sunday buses to Montgomery. Makes getting home with the baby so much easier. But it is hilarious that Monty (pop 1,200) has a bus every 2hrs, while just across the border Shrewsbury (pop 76,000) has no Sunday buses at all.

Next month Spain is bringing in some new laws to help protect vulnerable road users (Royal Decreto 518/2026). For motorists this means new overtaking rules and no tailgating cyclists. Local authorities can also more easily bring in two-way cycling on one-way streets.

I've spent some of my summer trying to map some of Shropshire's Quiet Lanes on OpenStreetMap. A 2003 CPRE report suggests that there were 25 QL roads planned for Salop so I'm probably missing a few.🧵

Interesting cycle track for riders to learn on. The layout is a stylised version of Stratford's road system and features crossings, traffic lights and matching road names. Photo credits Ken Lawler (Facebook)

I made an animation which shows the effects of air pollution on pedestrians waiting to cross the road, along with what can be done to reduce its harmful effects: stepback.gregdev.com Thank you to @ianwalker.bsky.social for the inspiration for doing so during a conversation a couple of weeks' back!

'Step back' - air pollution at pedestrian crossings
Every busy road produces a cloud of pollution you can't see. Where you stand in it matters more than most people might realise.

Controversial opinion but closing this park & ride isn't a big loss. Less than 10 minutes to drive to Oxon P&R. The "walk on" service is expensive and inconvenient. Takes a weird long route into town on Saturdays. Biggest issue is if they stop using it for the football parking.

Major problem in the UK is that we really don't build *apartments* outside of major cities. We are desperately in love with sprawl, unnavigable suburbs, and car dependency. Most homes do not need to be the UK standard "tiny shitty semi detached" pattern.

Listening to yesterday's Shropshire Council planning committee. £130k of Section 106 money towards rejigging a roundabout near a hotel development but nothing for active travel despite there being a strategy to improve infrastructure nearby.

I look forward to reading another balanced article on cycling from the Telegraph.

Below are two smaller pictures showing the cycle lane in green and a line of royal mail vans queuing at traffic lights.

Shropshire Council deputy leader has confirmed that the Castle Street two way cycleway (in red) has being axed from Shrewsbury's Station Gyratory changes. Disappointing but not entirely surprised, the project seemed to be a bit of a hot mess. Lets do it properly next time.
Map of Shrewsbury's Station Gyratory scheme with some trees and a road layout. A red line shows a section of cycleway going into the town centre that wont be built. We have already cancelled as much of the next stage as we can, which was going to be a two-way cycle lane all the way up to Pride Hill, downscaling it to only go up to Meadow Place. This will use easily removable street furniture (think Town Walls speed bumps) rather than permanent concrete.

Shropshire has a new parkrun. Great! Shame its inaccessible to anyone outside a car. 👎
Getting there by public transport
There are no public transport links available.

Getting there on foot
Due to its location, Haughmond Hill is not accessible on foot.

Getting there by road
Haughmond Hill is located just off the B5062 between Shrewsbury and Newport, Shropshire. It is approx. 5 miles from Shrewsbury and 15 miles from Telford.

There is a pay and display car park on site - card only or via the RingGo parking app. Regular visitors should consider purchasing a yearly membership for just £38 of free parking and benefits.

As the car park is small, please arrive early and/or consider car sharing where possible. Unfortunately due to the rural location there is no alternative parking available.

Shrewsbury greening scheme looks promising. Hopefully a road diet to undo some of the mistakes Thomas Telford made 200 odd years ago.
‘Green Street at Abbey Foregate’ project is the first in a series of innovative yet practical interventions that deliver the Shrewsbury Movement and Public Space Strategy (MPSS).
The project will enhance the town’s natural environment by ‘greening’ and repurposing road space and its associated car parking dominance through the introduction of new routes through, and seating within, green and accessible spaces for the benefit of residents and visitors that prioritises pedestrians and cyclists.
Focused on the road running between The Abbey, one of the town’s most prominent heritage assets and a row of shops, restaurants and a public house it will deliver 1,080m2 of new, improved and accessible local green spaces, with the potential to foster investment and increase economic growth in the area.A Google Streetview photo showing Abbey Foregate, the road mentioned in the scheme. On the right is Shrewsbury Abbey and on the left is a pub and a row of houses. The road is wide with free shortstay parking running allong the right hand side.

Kinda nice to see my local council using Open Street Map for some of its maps, especially when I can see some of the changes I've made make an appearance. Not so cool that they've failed to properly attribute OSM contributors in any of its images.

A watermark reading "Draft - subject to Council Approval" can be seen going diagonally across the document.

This new road got approved yesterday. It doesn't have a cycle path along it because the application is for "enabling infrastructure". Committee discussed when active travel provision should actually be defined with no apparent precedence set.
