As Borges wrote “Nothing is built on stone; All is built on sand, but we must build as if the sand were stone.” But what he never considered is, what if we just built on stone instead of sand??

The thing is that it's not a % of projects that will ship, it's a kind of absolute floor, and so if AI actually increases productivity what you'd predict is an exponentially growing rate of project abandonment with probably a very small baseline increase in shipped good product rate.

Everyone else is worried about the AI apocalypse but I’ve been hearing about that for 30 years and I can’t get very worked up any more. For me the question is: If these things can code (and they can!) then why aren’t we seeing any great software? www.nytimes.com/2026/09/12/o...

Agree 100% with this — the expectation for students to take long-term volunteer positions is morally wrong & locks out underrepresented communities. It’s also not even a great way to get your foot in the door! Unpaid staff are not first in line for cool experiences or facetime with researchers.

relatedly, I STRONGLY believe folks should take at least a year for non-academic work before going to grad school It’s so important to get a sense of what is and isn’t normal, since grads will so often need to advocate for themselves against their university and any organization they’re in

A time series graph. Total number of requests, in blue, sits at about 4.5 million for about a month before climbing to 10 million in about three days

Here's a funny article -- coordinates stored in float precision have significantly variable precision across the globe I suspect *most* people who "use floats" are actually using doubles in this day and age -- but most isn't all! kevinventullo.com/2026/07/20/a...

"people just assume languages and packages will all agree" This is absolutely true, which is also annoying as a package author -- a lot of my software does something similar to other packages, but makes different choices, because I think they're better! And often users assume it should be identical

Deeply funny that the only citations in the entire Wikipedia article for BUFR are documenting complaints about it
Wikipedia article for BUFR

The Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data (BUFR) is a binary data format maintained by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The latest version is BUFR Edition 4. BUFR Edition 3 is also considered current for operational use. BUFR was created in 1988 with the goal of replacing the WMO's dozens of character-based, position-driven meteorological codes, such as SYNOP (surface observations), TEMP (upper air soundings) and CLIMAT (monthly climatological data). BUFR was designed to be portable, compact, and universal. Any kind of data can be represented, along with its specific spatial/temporal context and any other associated metadata. In the WMO terminology, BUFR belongs to the category of table-driven code forms, where the meaning of data elements is determined by referring to a set of tables that are kept and maintained separately from the message itself.

BUFR is a complex format that can be difficult to use [1] and it presents some weaknesses.[2] The introduction of BUFR format led to data "disparition" and many formatting errors.[3][4][5]

pure “consensus” is impossible, someone is always going to be mad at you the question as a Mayor is who you’d rather have be mad at you: -a motorist mad that they have to pay slightly more for parking -a grieving parent whose kid was killed by a motorist weird that Michelle Wu chose the latter

Judson's Last Ride
COMMENTARY
By Sean Trende
RCP Staff

Today is a day I've dreaded for over a decade. At around 6:20 a.m., we'll get my oldest son Judson up,give him a bath, put his safety harness on (don't worry, we'll dress him first, and then watch him amble down our driveway to the school bus, as we have almost every school day since fourth grade. He'll go through whatever class activities he has, come to the end of the day, and get ready to ride the bus home, as he has almost every school day since fourth grade. His teachers and aides will wipe their eyes, put him on the bus, and off he'll go, just the same as he's done almost every school day since fourth grade.
