Two things, and I know they’re not the most important. but 1. Thinking of all the great films that got made after being rejected by a bunch of studios. There are now even fewer options. 2. Netflix is NOT a tech company. They make entertainment just like all the other streamers

The 9 manga that made me. 4 of these I started reading in English before I learned Japanese (Akira, Domu, Ranma, Guyver). Dragonball I read in Japanese before I could really understand it. (Read English summaries on the late ‘90s internet.) The last 4 are some of the first I read in Japanese.

I debated friends about this back in the heyday of DVDs. “But studios count on DVD sales” they said. Yes, but that’s just a sop. I always maintained studios will never be happy till they can charge you every time you watch a movie. Forced ads is just another facet of that.

The first 10 or so times I went to TGS I was fortunate enough to attend as an exhibitor. It meant I had to work, but I was able to escape the crowds, enter early, and leave late. The first time I went on a regular pass, I wanted to turn around and take the 40-minute train ride back to Tokyo.

First The Bear and now Widow’s Bay getting hit with the comedy label. I’d contend that both shows are just good at depicting the fullness of life, along with all its absurdities, coincidences, and humorous situations that compose it. That’s way more realistic than one-note serious dramas.

Joseph Green’s “Interplanetary Conscience” is the book I always dreamed about as a kid/teen. If you’re trying to colonize a planet, how do you decide if a species is intelligent or just an alien version of a fish or lizard? Really good stuff, and a good approach to the ethical questions raised.

I enjoy led this volume of Tegoku Daimakyo (天国大魔境) but it definitely was a part of a build up to something big on the horizon. Good focus on Kiruko and Maru’s relationship. Still kills me that Ishiguro doesn’t really delineate between scenes in the past and present. It’s not but a little jarring

The horror elements in 動物人間4 (Doubutsu Ningen, or, as I cal it Humanimals) really ramp up in this volume, and that’s saying something! A good portion is off camera, but that makes it all the more compelling and disturbing.

I’ve been ruminating on this for a long time. A lot of what is considered classic literature has plots so bare they wouldn’t even make a good elevator pitch. It’s mostly characters dealing with repercussions of their actions, many of which happen between chapters.

Why’d this guy bring something so dense on vacation? If I’m on vacation my attention will be focused elsewhere and the ability to concentrate will be limited. Not taking that into account really sounds like a skill issue. Vacation reading is why “The DaVinci Code” and “The Beach” exist.

I really got into using Al while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:

Once you know the formula for narrative non-fiction it’s hard to enjoy reading it tbh because it’s often just watching a story check off bullet points in a specific order. Some people are great at making it feel organic but many, many people are not.
