A WWII era bomb (Luftwaffe’s SC250, with ~130kgs of explosives) had to be exploded in place at a construction site in downtown Belgrade this morning. Few hundred nearby residents were removed from their homes for several hours, just in case. youtu.be/7-NZZSlfA0Q?...

Large scale historical datasets are very hard to come by. Historical research is often about pulling scraps of different things together to make sense of it all. Historical primary sources can be considered *traces* of the past, because so much stuff goes unrecorded.

Customary by now, Serbian Railways are stopping all rail traffic nationally on a day of large student/opposition protests. They usually invented a reason for this, a 'bomb threat', a 'software glitch'. This time they didn't bother, they just halted all traffic and that is that.

Cartoon by Bernard Hage:

Title How to watch the collapse of civilisation

1. A bearded middle-aged man sitting in a chair, looking at his phone. He's slumped forward, his posture is terrible; a broken red line traces the curve of his back, and there's a red X next to the picture.

2. The same man sitting in the same chair looking at the same phone, but this time he's sitting up straight. A broken green line traces his straight spine, and there's a green tick next to the picture.

Today’s local elections in Serbia – in Mionica, Negotin and Sečanj – were a snapshot of that reality: fraud, intimidation, assaults on observers, and mobs operating with police complicity. We believe democracy cannot survive without accountability. Vučić’s regime threatens both.

Why is Vučić afraid of national elections? Because when he’s not sending thugs to beat up students, young people, citizens, MPs or journalists – as he did today in Mionica – he knows he can’t win. His party is increasingly isolated, holding on to power through violence, fear and voter manipulation.

Vučić is hoping for a magical US-RU deal on the issue, and looks to ride Orban's coat tails on this. There's practically zero chance of that happening. He and the gvmt still refuse the idea of takeover of NIS ownership from Gazprom, thus increasing the chances of major internal oil crisis.
