Something that has seemed increasingly apparent to me is the power of a platform to set expectations for the quality bar and production value of the games it runs. Platforms have immense _curation_ powers

The challenge is part of the charm 😛 But you are right, that would be inefficient You're not the only one to raise this point : bsky.app/profile/brie... My most recent and fav example of this is Crow Country. While made with modern tooling, the game has an insane ambiance and runs on anything

Yes but that's still not even close A Steam Deck can run most of PS4/XOne gen games with AAA quality A PS2 has 32MB of RAM and a CPU clock rate of 300MHz. Today, consumer hardware typically has 1000x more RAM and 10x faster CPU speed

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP. Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down. "AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago. We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

SRDebugger is a real missing spot, it was plug-and-play in Unity There are some debug menus and consoles available, and it's not hard to build a runtime debug screen, but a full-feature turnkey solution could be cool

Meme from the "Invicible" anime with Omni-man talking to his son about incoming jetfighters

The jetfighters are labeled : "Realtime GI on RTX 5090"
Omniman and his son are labeled : "Baked GI on a 15yo GPU"

A lot of people—I’d say almost all adults—are not told “I’m proud of you” often enough. Culturally it seems we reserve that praise for mentees or kids. Be that person! Say it to your spouse. Your siblings. Your friends. Even your parents and folks you look up to!

Final two cents on the PMG x Kotick story: It is paramount that you support the journalism you want to see in the world. Outlets like PMG continue to raise the bar, BUT if you want even more of that probing journalism you have to give reporters the runway and financial backing to produce it.

in a week that saw microsoft give activision the reins to halo and bungie pivot back to destiny, one thing has become abundantly clear: the people in charge do not have a long-term, overriding plan. they’re just reacting. the result, when times are bad, is chaos
"Things are still very chaotic," a current id Software employee who was granted anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly told Aftermath. "While there has been an attempt to communicate to the studios, it is still entirely in bullshit corporate speak. I still don't believe they have a clear vision for the future. The only concrete thing they have communicated is they want higher profits, and they want it now. Aggressive goals are being set that would have been unrealistic even before the layoffs. ... To say the workers within Xbox have a dim view of the future is putting it mildly. We keep thinking morale can't sink lower but the obvious incompetence of Xbox management somehow keeps driving it down worse."
This mirrors shifts in strategy that have come to dominate the still-new Sharma era, including others outlined Tuesday. Rare is joining Activision, Turn 10 and Playground are fusing, and—most gallingly, considering their history—Obsidian is being folded into Bethesda to work on Fallout instead of its own original series. As with the previous round of layoffs, details betray Microsoft's haphazard approach: A Halo developer got promoted and laid off in the same week. Gears of War: E-Day's story director is out of a job days after celebrating that the game had gone gold. Hellblade developer Ninja Theory, now without a buyer after a brief glimmer of hope, is once again on the chopping block.
All of this betrays a simplistic mindset that does not accurately reflect the reality of game development: People are disposable, studios are interchangeable, and series can be traded like sports teams. Nothing matters more than franchises and their money-printing prowess. Unless, evidently, you are Hideo Kojima, in which case Microsoft suddenly has money to burn.
