it’s sad, but not unexpected, how quickly games media moved on from saying they’ll support women and trans writers to regularly scheduled programming of ignoring us. good work exists in the sidelines. we will keep making it. maybe someday someone established will give a shit.

Always just a tiny bit sad when I get curious about a tea (drama) channel on YouTube and click back to their early uploads, & it's clear they started the channel wanting to be something else (musician, artist, animator, etc.), but talking about niche celebrities was the only thing that did numbers.

I can tell that games media is in a deeply unhealthy place when I see some of the most talented, experienced, and incisive reporters and critics in the space say they don't know how much longer they can keep on doing the work. The industry is hollowing out and the writing itself is suffering for it.

Games media is not only unhealthy because there aren't jobs. For years, games media (journalism in general, really) has run on a deeply unhealthy system that incentivized the worst kind of writing and devalued the labor of writers and other creators.

Mothership is one of the clearest signs we need more women and queer people bc the excitement when they launched was *palpable* and has as only continued to be so. Nearly every person I've seen discover them, or who I've shared their high quality work with, has gone "where the fuck has this been?"

Games media cuts have felt unending for a while, but the mood feels especially grim among indie outlets with the latest wave of layoffs. More than ever, if the game industry values its media, it needs to support them. Buy some advertising, sponsor content, purchase subs. It makes a big difference.

I will probably never work in games media again and I'm at peace with that. It's not because I wasn't "good enough," it's that there's too few opportunities, working conditions continue to worsen, goal posts keep shifting, and people keep getting laid off. I'm ready to move on to whatever is next.

increasingly it feels like there was some kind of fluke in the late 2010s and early 2020s in which women were hired in games media and as the overton window continues to shift, it's going right back to the 90s and 00s just doesn't feel like it's ever getting better
