Without detracting from the failure of UUK's efforts, what would it mean if UK universities 'won over Reform'? What compromises would that entail? Binning the arts and humanities? Rejecting duties mandated by the Equalities act? Agreeing that only 30-ish universities should have funded research?

Historical comparisons with the Nazi era were sometimes more distracting than illuminating. Some parallels are now impossible to dismiss: the normalization of political violence, the integration of old far-right networks, and the belief that the radical right can be contained once it has power. 1/2

When the press hounded Diana to her death, there was reflection, it was recognized that something needed to change. I'm not holding my breath that the same will happen with Arday. I don't expect anyone will take responsibility for allowing an embittered Nazi to lead a pack of dogs like that.
