Throwback Thursday, LePage Edition: facing a hospital funding crisis back in 2013, Paul LePage said “we definitely have too many hospitals.” Today, 10 of Maine’s 24 rural hospitals are at risk of closing and Maine has lost 12 birthing centers in the last decade.

If you swam, fished or paddled a lake or river in the US over the past couple of years, there’s a more than 80% chance the water contained toxic “forever chemicals.” The findings come as the Trump administration rolls back policies aimed at reducing PFAS in drinking water.

Report Finds “Forever Chemicals” Pollute 83 Percent of 1,602 US Waterways Tested
“If anything, the report dramatically understates the problem,” said a co-chair of the Great Lakes PFAS Action Network.

Christa Pike’s lawyers had warned execution would be ‘difficult and perhaps cruel’ due to her veins
Ex-lawyer for woman Tennessee attempted to execute says defense filings said she was at risk for ‘exactly what happened’ A former lawyer for Christa Pike says he was not surprised that Tennessee botched its attempt to execute her because attorneys had warned that problems accessing her veins could make the procedure dangerous and potentially cruel. James Crowson, who represented Pike during part of her post-conviction appeals, said he had followed the case from afar before the failed execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on 30 September. The tortuous, botched execution of Christa Pike is truly horrifying. And while it feels unique in some ways, in reality it is also only the latest in a history of botched executions going back years — YEARS — in numerous states. Please know: this is the reality of the death penalty in this country.

Jesus Christ Cornell
What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.
