Zero surprises here although from my 5 years in the US, I think the biggest barrier will be overcoming the mindset of individuals refusing to pay for other people to have health care via additional taxes. Anything approaching socialism was generally met vitriol and contempt from people I spoke to.

I stuck Ubuntu on an elderly Macbook a couple of months ago because it had deprecated to the point of not receiving updates any more and not being allowed on uni network. Not got the webcam working yet (not really tried) but the actual machine runs really nicely. Just use Office apps in browser.

A Jarvis Cocker tribute spam email! Sing it with me: "🎶I want to write for Common People, I want to write whatever Common People read 🎶"
Spam email reading:

Dear Dr. Michael T Craig,

I am Mary Davis, Editorial assistant from UK based publishing company, contacting you with the reference from our editorial department. Basing on your outstanding contribution to the scientific community, we would like to write a book for you.

Researchers like you are adding so much value to the scientific community, yet you are not getting enough exposure. No matter how many papers you publish in famous journals, you will be still unknown to common people. To solve this problem, we came up with this unique solution.

With our book writing service, we will write your research contributions in common man’s language. We will also include all your published papers into this book in a way that a common man can understand it. And then, we will publish your book with our publishing group. Before, publication, we will send the draft to you for scientific accuracy, once you approve our draft, we then proceed for publication. You will get all the rights of your book, and all the sales generated from your book will be credited to you.

Your book will then be listed on famous websites like Amazon, eBay, Goodreads, and many other popular book websites. As a result, you will get good credit and people will recognize your hard work and your scientific contributions.

Last but not least, after the publication of your book, it will be published in Google News, Yahoo, and other major news channels. What more can you ask for?

All we need is your book writing contract, and you will get all the rights for your book.

Will be waiting to hear from you.

Best Regards,

Angela Brown | Editorial Assistant

This is a great start but should go further. If the UK govt. believes the Israeli state is backing this ethnic cleansing, then sanctions should be against the entire state, not just illegal settlements. Anti-apartheid sanctions didn't target only parts of SA! www.theguardian.com/world/2026/s...

80 year-olds with pro-Palestine signs: arrested as terrorists. Greens planning to block a road, to highlight an existential crisis: sent down for years. Masked far-right thugs blocking roads and ports, using intimidation, obstruction & threatening behaviour: no arrests. The real two-tier policing.

Isaac Newton famously wrote “if I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Academic progress is always iterative and builds on the work of others, and a key component of academic culture is proper citation & attribution. It would be a travesty to let LLMs destroy that.

It continues to be profoundly disappointing when scientists who I respect and whose work I value talk about using text generators. Do you value your own work so little that you would replace it with slop? You don't have to participate in the bubble. And the next AI winter cannot come soon enough.

You make a very good point. I actually tend not to Google fellowship applicants as I try to know as little as possible so I don't get biased, and focus more on their abilities and the merit of the proposal itself. Maybe I should revisit this...

Mick Craig @mickcraig.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Yeah. Any shortlisting committee I'm on, the very first thing I do is Google the candidates while reading their CV. There would have been plenty of red flags here... universities tend to get money if someone brings their own fellowship but there should still be sanity checks before endorsing.

The journal I'm reviewing for doesn't. Need three windows - one for text, one for legend, one for actual figures. It's unnecessarily annoying. Related: Adobe continues to be a bloated AI-dripping piece of crap. 🤮

Mick Craig @mickcraig.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I'm not religious but I hope that there is a special hell reserved for people who send manuscripts to journals with figures, legends and results all on different pages instead of inline figures and legends. Makes reviewing electronically so much more, erm, dynamic. And scrolly. And annoying.
