Hey! I have an idea - let's use this new thing that we can *really* organize on and it will be the central repository for all of our stuff .... you know, except the stuff that's not on it.
Four panel comic with two figures: Panel 1: figure on left 'Did you have time to review that document I shared with you?'. Panel 2: figure on right 'On Google Drive?', left figure 'umm no...', 'Onedrive?' 'Nope' 'Sharedrive?' 'uh, no' 'thumbdrive?' 'no' 'email?' 'nah' 'wait... a paper copy?' 'no'. Panel 3: 'On Slack?' 'No' 'Teams folder?' 'Nah' 'Dropbox?' 'No' 'BBS?' 'No' 'Encrypted 5 1/4 inch floppy?" 'ummm No?'. Panel 4: left figure, looking at phone 'Know what? I forgot to share it."

I'm writing a talk on the current problems with scientific publishing. It's getting harder and harder to avoid just screaming at the computer. Here's a typical slide 🧪
A screenshot of a slide. The title is "Open access: death of a dream". On the left hand side is the title and abstract of a paper published in 2021 estimating the actual costs of publishing an academic paper as between $200 and $1000 dollars, with high-profile journals with high rejection rates being towards the upper end and $400 being the cost for an "average" paper. On the right is a table of glamour mags and their APCs: $11400 for Cell, $12850 for Nature and all the hybrid Nature XX journals, $7350 for Nature communications, $7170 for the Lancet and $7030 for Current Biology.

Fully agree with this piece 🧪 In the past, I've contacted a Prof that miscited my paper (we did do the research, just in another ref). No response.. I think the reason is the long process of corrections post publ. So, better to ignore. Wrong citations should be treated easier, it will help everyone
Part of the article:
Peer review cannot realistically verify every reference. There simply is not enough time. Today, targeted AI tools could potentially help detect mis-citations or odd citation patterns, making the work more robust [4].

Journals should also offer a clear, low-friction process for post-publication corrections. A publication should not be set in stone after proofs. A formal reporting mechanism must allow authors to challenge and fix citation errors without needing the citing author’s approval.
