When my dog eventually dies, many years from now, I am glad to know I can (somewhat) easily get Amazon to stop suggesting dog toys. A good UX system needs to know how to forget things about you, and to recognize change

Hot take: the transparency here, and the ability to delete items, are Good, Actually. If anything, this should be less hidden away! I deleted the system’s false belief that I prefer gluten-free snacks and one of the reasons I could select was “life event or loss.”

Velour! That does sound ultra-cozy. My usual travel outfit is an old set of lightweight black Universal Standard leggings and a matching long cardigan, with an oversized scarf and of course a shirt. A velour hoodie might be a nice upgrade!

Saying something briefer like "This sad day proves that violence is never the answer. The ongoing war in Gaza must end" would have been true to his principles and not felt like a downplaying of the trauma of that day.

Is the destruction and desolation in Gaza a proportionate response to that trauma? Absolutely NOT. But that is not the fault of the dead. De-centering their deaths, and the horrors of that day, in a post supposedly remembering it is disrespectful to the lost and to the mourners

Over a thousand people, including young people at a concert and peace activists like Vivan Silver (z"l) were murdered. Hundreds kidnapped from their homes. And all this on a minor but until now entirely joyful Jewish holiday. A horror, now made worse by the knowledge that Netanyahu was warned

I am as much of a simp for Mamdani as anyone, but that message about the October 7th massacre was a very big miss, and precisely the sort of thing people point to as "proof" that he's anti-semitic

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

This is cultural hegemony as defined by Gramsci, basically. You don’t (and can’t without a lot of work) see the shape of the structure that shapes you

Fun fact: Tesla went with a giant touchscreen instead of knobs for the Model 3 purely to save time and money. Knobs would have required spinning up a whole supply chain. The company spun it as a luxury feature and much of the industry followed suit. But it was always an inferior substitute.

Lafayette Park and the Ellipse exist as public parks because the nation's early leaders deemed it unnecessary and unseemly to fence off palatial grounds in the people's capital. "Trump's plan" is an insult to the nation's people and ideals.

Justin's getting a lot of shit for this and I get why people are mad about it, but I think part of what's going on here is the distorting effects of the background context of two-party politics as the default way we sort people into "sides" and the downstream effects of how we interpret disagreement

Im Korea when they arrest a President -- which happens a LOT -- they dont need to ask who will enforce the law. They have a special team to do the arrest, and a special court to hear the case. My humble plea is that we do the same: have an actual team that exists to enforce those pesky laws that

One of the things Mamdani has done well in office is centering the stories of and glorifying city workers. The next Dem president doesn’t have to run on all these details but they’d better publicize the hell out of fixing them when they do
