I asked him if he ever got any bulk orders, or had thoughts on how to scale up or manufacture them more efficiently. He looked at me like I was crazy. He *likes* doing them one at a time, it's his passion, and since he lives in a civilized country, he doesn't *need* to worry about scaling up.

Again, much of Pete Hegseth’s deal is the only skill his job demanded for a long time was keeping a trim figure to be conventionally pretty for stay-at-home moms watching daytime tv. His job was “be pretty,” but he knows that’s a girl job, so he’s deeply insecure and is trying to make it a boy job.

I wish I were back in grad school surrounded by nerds so I could have impassioned discussions about US’ian sociocultural anxieties as reflected in the transition from the Gibson Girl (created by a eugenicist) to the Mucha Girl (created by an immigrant) to Betty Boop (inspired by Black jazz singers).

Female iconography in pop culture fascinates me. Black women scholars often discuss Mammy, Jezebel, & Topsy, because we were relegated to those stereotypes for generations. But the Gibson Girl aesthetic was adopted by class-conscious Black women as a refutation of these negative images.
