NY Fed paper takes a look at the widespread situation of being forced to come into the office to do work that could be done remotely and why it happens. www.newyorkfed.org/medialibrary...
Roughly half of in-office days are spent entirely on Zoom calls or doing solo work according to a new
survey of college-educated Americans. These workers commute in just to work remotely from the office.
Existing measures of remote work that focus solely on working from home miss up to three quarters of its
true prevalence. We use a collage of data to unpack the drivers of working remotely from the office. The
biggest driver is geographic distance, which causes teammates to work in different offices or fully
remotely. Other contributors include non-compliance with in-office policies, poor coordination on inoffice days, and a tendency to take Zoom calls rather than booking meeting rooms even when everyone is
in the office.

Weird that just after officials like NY Fed's Williams and VC Jefferson got an October hike off the table in favor of December the unpleasant inflation data is already pulling folks back to the end of the month.
Oct 14 (Reuters) - A Federal Reserve interest-rate decision later this month may be a closer call than previously thought, traders bet on Wednesday, after Labor Department data showed consumer inflation last month rose 3.7%, faster than expected.

Traders had priced interest-rate futures for about a 22% chance of an October rate hike. After the report, which also showed faster underlying inflation than economists had anticipated, the implied probability of a rate hike at the Fed's October 27-28 meeting rose to around 40%.

IMF: "It may be the case that bond yields are moving back toward the levels seen before the global financial crisis, when growth and inflation were higher than in the 2010s," but "risks of adverse feedback loops related to higher fiscal imbalances & leveraged trades in bond markets are increasing."
Sovereign bond yields have risen amid renewed inflation pressures from higher energy prices, fiscal concerns, and, in some cases, stronger-than-expected economic growth. It may be the case that bond yields are moving back toward the levels seen before the global financial crisis, when growth and inflation were higher than in the 2010s. At the same time, risks of adverse feedback loops related to higher fiscal imbalances and leveraged trades in bond markets are increasing. In addition, as central banks have been reducing their balance sheets, greater reliance on price-sensitive investors could contribute to further yield volatility.

As government bonds underpin the global financial system, the consequences of higher sovereign yields could extend well beyond public debt. Higher yields could further raise discount rates and depress valuations across other assets, including those that are AI-related, while reducing the value of bonds used as collateral.
