Been thinking about this since I was at Burghley House last month. N front (1587), featuring the Bow Room on 1st floor (decorated 1698) above the ground entrance hall (latter not open to public). The ceiling inside, right, it's so high that it means the 3rd storey windows aren't open to rooms?
Burghley House, nr. Stamford (Lincolnshire), as built under William Cecil, Lord Burghley (1520-98), north front, dated on the parapet 1587Bow Room, looking NE towards the bay, on 1st floor over N porch in centre of N wing, painted by Louis Laguerre in 1697 for John, 5th Earl Exeter (1648-1700)
(sorry the windows blew out this photo a bit. it is the N side so it's very dark here compared to the outside. imagine how cold it got for dinner parties)
