My drinking days are in the rearview mirror these days but I consider myself extremely fortunate to have spent several of my drinking years in Milwaukee.

The White Sox didn’t sweep the Guardians. Is that bad? Is their season on the brink of disaster?

Bauers is going through it this series but can’t see sitting him. Mitchell on the other hand has looked lost enough at the plate it warrants considering Lara tomorrow unless the numbers against I assume Ray say differently.

Seems like if you're going to make a national story out of Hasan Piker, who campaigned a few times with the Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, saying Israel causes antisemitism, you should also make a national story out of the favorite intellectual of the US Vice President supporting Hitler.

Fenton Johnson ‘Tired’, from “The Book of American Negro Poetry” ed. by James Weldon Johnson, 1922
TIRED

I am tired of work; I am tired of building up somebody else's civilization. Let us take a rest, M'Lissy Jane. I will go down to the Last Chance Saloon, drink a gallon or two of gin, shoot a game or two of dice and sleep the rest of the night on one of Mike's barrels. You will let the old shanty go to rot, the white people's clothes turn to dust, and the Calvary Baptist Church sink to the bottomless pit. You will spend your days forgetting you married me and your nights hunting the warm gin Mike serves the ladies in the rear of the Last Chance Saloon. Throw the children into the river; civilization has given us too many. It is better to die than it is to grow up and find out that you are colored. Pluck the stars out of the heavens. The stars mark our destiny. The stars marked my destiny. I am tired of civilization.

I've not viewed pre or post game national broadcasts but there are a lot of first-person testimonies of A J Pierzynski's controversial/problematic behavior out there. And why David Ortiz remains employed as a broadcaster after the ProPublica reporting is reason enough to discount national media.

Final: Brewers 3, Padres 2 How did the Milwaukee Brewers win that baseball game? Your guess is as good as any. And it also doesn't matter. All that does is they did. Somehow, someway. They did. Series: 1-0, Brewers

George Saunders on using AI: "Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that?"
Have you spent time trying to write or revise with AI? Is there an experiment that would be interesting enough to try?

I have not. Not for a second. To me, this whole idea of using AI to write is . . . anathema. A thing to be most radically avoided.

Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that? Not even in an email and certainly not in a short story or novel.Who are we ceding our authority to, exactly, when we let AI write for us? And why? Why surrender our agency (that amazing ability we have to reach across time and space, with our strange, idiosyncratic phenomenon, and land within the sensibility of another human being) to something that, by its very design, pushes the individual sensibility aside? And in the name of . . . what, exactly? Ease, I guess? Efficiency? The person who chooses to write with AI has also sacrificed, from the start, the opportunity of experiencing difficulty, of struggling to say what he wants to say, of making himself evident in his prose, of trying to find out what he believes. By this, he sacrifices a chance to know himself and his mind better. To me, that’s a shame. And it’s dangerous, because, as we are now finding out, it affects the brain and lessens our capabilities. Thanks, but no thanks, get thee behind me, etc.

Hard to imagine a Baseball Prospectus contributor could be this unaware of the Brewers style of play. Frustration and anger seem to be in play here, not ignorance.

So you know previous waves of technological fabulism the tech companies threw a little loose change at social behavioral research and user interface experience. whats interesting about AI interesting is that they aren’t even pretending to care about how people use the technology.

I remember @jrradcliffe.bsky.social respectfully pointing out the appearance of hypocrisy when lifting Pratt for the same offense and not Contreras when he routinely jogs out infield grounders. Contreras catches over 100 games a season so some consideration is required. Johnny Hardass consistency.

The irony being, of course, that they're the small market team (along with Arizona) that *does* go out and try to sign free agents and spend some money, but they keep inadvertently proving the point that you should never pay above the age curve.
