Productivity as an adult is just an endless process of applying new psychological tricks and operant conditioning to yourself until an acceptable number of tasks are completed.

i was fortunate enough to profile Margaret Hamilton in 2019. A really kind and curious person. This was my favorite story she told me:

Yes, I took a picture of it. www.moma.org/collection/w...
Snow shovel hanging from the ceiling in MoMA. It is entitled "In Advance of the Broken Arm" by Marcel Duchamp.

August 1964 (fourth version, after lost original of November 1915).

He bought a snow shovel, signed it, and hung it from the ceiling.

I remember seeing this hanging from the ceiling at MoMA and wondering why it was there. I read the label and thought, "Of course, it's f*cking Duchamp." (Shout out to Glenstone Museum for introducing me to the work of Duchamp)

My favorite thing about going to music concerts on a weeknight is when the artist constantly thanks us for coming out on a MONDAY. Thank you for acknowledging the struggle we're all going to face tomorrow.

I haven't done it in years, but I like crowd pleasers like "Don't Stop Believing" or "Livin' on a Prayer". I'm on a a Les Mis kick, so maybe "Do You Hear the People Sing?" which is the last song I sang in public. We're getting a home karaoke machine, so I'll have more chances to figure it out.

I was going over some of the trends/eras of illustration with my students today and Corporate Memphis created the most conversation. It was compared to a business man in a happy face mask, Arial & pop music. Good in contexts like brightening up a train station, bad in masking the cruelness of tech.

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

It's Yellow 😆 It goes through loess upstream, so it picks up a lot of dirt and deposits it down the river. It's the birthplace of Chinese civilization because the land was fertile, similar to the Nile for Egypt.
A picture of the Yellow River in China taken from the Wikipedia page. It shows a green mountain in the background, a bridge spanning the yellow river.

It's more of a really bright tan color than yellow, from all the loess it picked up upstream.

Given how much fighting there's been over a high school being moved to a brand new building 2.5 miles away and adding one poorer, browner elementary to the cluster, yes, there'd be actual blood in the streets here.
