The construction revolution presents us with a challenge because it calls into question not only our technology, but our entire culture of planning, living and home ownership.

The advantage of stacked flats are that you can keep stacking them for more density, with the same footprint and green space. These versions are roughly 1.0, 1.6, and 2 FSR. Depending on the neighbourhood and incentives (i.e. for rental or non market housing) these could be easily scaled up.

Have you noticed that, unlike the energy transition, the construction transition is difficult for many people to understand? Whilst wind turbines and solar panels on rooftops are visible to everyone, the construction revolution is taking place behind the scenes.

Hemp and straw as pure building material are actually not that much different in terms of fire and insulation properties.

Datacentres should be required to generate their own energy, and only from renewable sources (not necessarily on site). They should also be required to use the same recycled water repeatedly, cooling it with the energy they produce. And they should export their waste heat to be used as a resource.

Lupine is a legume, it (among others) can be used as a binder to replace fossil stuff. I am certain it is already used for some sprayed hempcrete variants.

Hi Michael. There’s a really good group in the USA, Habitable, which is at least promoting more knowledge about the different materials used in buildings. I spoke with one of their staff the other day and suggested they contact you. (They were unaware of your great work.)

I’d like to share more of your content because I don’t want to be just a 'sender' – to be honest, I really can’t stand that. To that end, I follow people who I think might post something related to construction. However, I’ve noticed that you tend to keep things private. So please tag me.

This so-called ‘grey energy’ is no longer apparent to the layperson in the finished building, which is why a modern new-build house is often mistakenly regarded as entirely climate-friendly because it performs somewhat better than an older building or is in an urban area where space is needed.

Michael Burchert @michaelburchert.bsky.social · 20h
The problem of invisible ‘grey energy’ With the construction transition the most significant lever is invisible: A large proportion of climate-damaging emissions are not generated during heating, but rather during the production of construction before construction even begins.

Well, you know my answer! I prefer the straw, on the grounds that the hempcrete has a high-carbon material (lime) added for no apparent (good) reason. It makes the insulation value worse, and adds embodied emissions. Perplexing.

You can do loose fill but then you have to have some kind of industrial board and membrane. You can get away with lathe and plaster though, then you want to calculate if you are not going to use a lot of lime plaster in the end.

Hemp plant can be baled as well but unlike grain straw it is not a "waste" product since it has other uses like long, strong fibers for cloth etc. That is why only the foam core is used in hempcrete. In my opinion, the lime needs to be replaced with biobased binders, like lupine.

Interesting project where a 'normal' construction business is trying out: - mass timber - wood bricks - clay bricks (unfired) - straw insulation - hempcrete - ... + sufficiency oriented design (a.k.a. enough but cool and more through sharing stuff) Mainstream now. 🖼️Raab Bau lnkd.in/p/eDYrrEAW

That is definitely true, insitu hempcrete is for the masonry / concrete crowd. It's so much work and time compared to 'normal' timber strawbale building. Once it's a prefab block or panel things can change though.

Hemp is highly porous like straw, but in hempcrete the space between the plant parts is filled with lime as the matrix, which is more conductive leading to a lower thermal performance of the material vs plant matter alone.

Hempcrete needs to be thicker for the same performance as straw. Happy to show you both in comparison.

Imagine you’ve spent 5–50 years building your career and have now reached the position you wanted to be in, but everything is made of concrete, glass, metal. Now you’re carrying out life-cycle assessments & realise that straw, hemp, wood, clay are always the best technologies. Can you accept that?
