Nice to see interest in thermal storage, but this shouldn’t be news. 20 years ago in Munich a thermal store was built, using 6000 m³ of water to store around 450MWh of seasonal heat. Integrated into the landscaping, it doubled as a tobogganing hill.

@ianwalker.bsky.social Have you done anything on what you might call “aeronormativity”, i.e., the identification of medium/long distance travel with flying? As a non-flyer, I feel I encounter it quite a lot.

@karlwiderquist.bsky.social I thought you’d like this quote from jacobin.com/2022/04/socialist-femin… I’m sure you’re already across it, but I saw it and thought of you.
A quote from Charles Fourier: “Philosophy was right to vaunt liberty; it is the foremost desire of all societies’ creatures. But philosophy forgot that in civilized societies liberty is illusory if the common people lack wealth. When the wage-earning classes are poor, their independence is as fragile as a house without foundations. The free man who lacks wealth immediately sinks back under the yoke of the rich. The newly freed slave takes fright at the need of providing for his own subsistence and hastens to sell himself back into slavery in order to escape this new anxiety that hangs over him like Damocles’ sword.”

Grandad, grandad. Why didn't you do anything to stop it all? Yeah in hindsight we should have done more. Also in foresight. But I think we just hoped someone else would sort it out for us. Felt like they should. But they must have been waiting for us to do it. Sorry.

The business secretary Jonathan Reynolds says the racist protesters intimidating asylum seekers in Epping are "upset for legitimate reasons.” I don't remember any Labour frontbencher saying the same about people protesting the genocide in Gaza. On the contrary, they've criminalised peaceful dissent.

There's been a bigger scandal over a BBC documentary about the horrors inflicted by Israel against Palestinian children, over an irrelevant detail, than the horrors inflicted by Israel against Palestinian children. The world turned on its head. Depraved. Deranged.

Mass starvation. Ethnic cleansing. Genocide. That is what our government is enabling — and it should be eternally ashamed. End all arms sales to Israel now.

Netanyahu is openly gearing up to commit a crime of unthinkable proportions - the forced ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, with the continued backing of the US. Every sane and civilized country must oppose this.

The government was right to welcome Ukrainian refugees fleeing war. There is only one reason that people in Gaza, displaced by a genocide that our government abetted, are treated differently. That reason is anti-Palestinian racism.

At last a part-realization that VCs are responsible for the lamentable situation in UK HE. Even with a virtual monopoly on degree-awarding powers, they refused to use that power to force the Government to maintain real-terms payments, preferring to slash staff pay while hoarding their huge salaries.

Why are politicians talking about the destruction of Gaza as if it’s some random disaster? They know the truth: they spent 15 months rejecting our calls to stop arming Israel. Gaza must be rebuilt for Palestinians — and those responsible for its demolition must face justice.

It appears (from other reports) that Andrew Gwynne made some antisemitic remarks, among others in his WhatsApp messages. But that allegation has been dropped from the BBC report www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y7zpe… though. Why, I wonder?

How about if everyone bigging up “sustainable aviation fuel” pledged only to fly on planes using such fuel, where the airline has purchased it at an unsubsidised market price? Then we wouldn’t need a third runway.

It’s hard enough to listen to accounts of the terrible events in Southport, without BBC Radio 4 Today presenters opining that the perpetrator is “obviously an unconscionably vile individual”. This is not helpful. Maybe they should listen to their own Reith Lectures.

Currently on my TV, a man with a balloon phobia is being put into a room full of balloons. The fact that this is described as being based on the “the latest developments in neuroscience” means I’m reacting worse than he is.

Hello, everyone. Quick procedural question: Is there a decent Bluesky reader app yet, e.g., one that takes you by default to the last post you read, rather than the latest post in your timeline? Or maybe there’s a setting? It’s a bit clunky otherwise.
