My top four British films would be The Third Man, Lawrence of Arabia, The Remains of the Day (all in my all-time top ten), and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. After that, I'm not sure. Maybe Get Carter, Night and the City, or a kitchen sink drama. I need to see more Ken Loach and Mike Leigh.

I don't think I've even knowingly heard a full song by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, or that mentally ill Nazi who was married to a reality TV star. I hadn't even heard of Langley until the other day. I don't listen to the radio or its streaming equivalent, and I don't care about what's most popular.

Great thread here, and I'll add to it that my experience suggests this literacy crisis extends to non-textual media as well.

I've used the mirror vs. window/door analogy before, and I think both have validity. Representation is important, showing you that you aren't alone, and so is education and empathy-building for other people who differ from you. Good thread. Media literacy is low in our society these days.

DREGS! is a quarterly sci-fi and fantasy anthology comic magazine coming from Uncivilized. It'll be about 100 pages per issue, a mixture of black and white and color, mostly self-contained stories but a few serials. Some articles and interviews too. They're running a Kickstarter to kick things off:

I don't want to hear from an adult who's so rich he doesn't even know his own address.

Being a billionaire must be insane. You can buy new teeth, new skin. All your chairs cost 20,000 dollars and weigh 2,000 pounds. Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it's probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day

I just the other day thought of an Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode Henry Silva was in where he played a hitman hired by a crime boss to kill his wife. Economical writing/production - the whole episode uses only a few actors & just two sets. AHP season 2, episode 11, "A Better Bargain"

I used to think that way - "Why does Bergman make so many movies about writers and artists?" - but I don't care anymore. A lot of the best works of fiction are personal and even semi-autobiographical. An artist's own perspective is one of the most unique things they can bring to their work.

This piece was fascinating, getting at a point I'd never considered: bin-Laden's entire concept about what 9/11 would do to America was just... wrong. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

Bin Laden was equally clear about how he thought terrorism would yield his desired result. In a March 1997 CNN interview with Peter Bergen, he spoke of transferring “the battle into the United States.” In a May 2000 speech, he told supporters that the war would henceforth be waged “against the United States, in the United States.” Americans, he observed to ABC’s John Miller in 1998, cannot tolerate pain, and will react to attacks not by fighting back and blaming al‑Qaeda, but instead by asking “what their government has done that forced us to defend ourselves.” In a November 2001 interview, he hinted at a theory of political change in America: Its citizens should “take the same stand that they did previously,” when they protested the Vietnam War and the presidents who waged it.

Nelly Lahoud, a professor at the Army War College and the author of the definitive book on the Abbottabad documents, told me this political pipe dream was bin Laden’s whole plan: “to replicate the anti–Vietnam War movement of the United States, to get the American public to put pressure on the U.S. government to withdraw its forces from the Middle East.” The documents reveal a man and an organization blindsided by the American reaction to the September 11 attacks. Bin Laden and his associates “didn’t think that the United States would respond by waging war,” Lahoud said. He did not contemplate or plan for the long-term occupation of Afghanistan, nor did he expect the methodical killing of his operatives in a campaign that lasted years.

Is there a reason why there's more discussion about 9/11 this year prior to the actual anniversary? Is it because it's the 25th anniversary? Or because dipshits are saying Mamdani shouldn't be a part of the remembrance? Or because Trump gave a speech instead of attending the no-speech event?

The flesh-colored hot dog man wants to be eaten, and the fry man is eating itself. Maybe the fries are edible but not part of the creature - maybe he's just a living cone to put giant fries into, and then he carries them around and eats them whenever he so desires.
