Probably a colorful giallo like the original Suspiria*, The Fifth Cord, Blood and Black Lace, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, or an Edwige Fenech one. ______________ *some purists say Suspiria isn't a true giallo because of the supernatural elements, but I think of it as at least adjacent

Ashes [Ceniza en la Boca] is one of the best new films I've seen in 2026, anchored by an understated & captivating performance by Anna Díaz. It's a humanistic film in the tradition of neorealism & the Dardenne brothers. Made in Mexico & Spain. Seen at AFI Silver's annual Latin America Film Festival.

AI has talked kids into suicide, fueled paranoid delusional that led to murder, degraded education quality in both k-12 and higher ed, run roughshod over copyright law, increased spam, fueled spam, fueled fraud, degraded the environment, put people out of work, the list goes on and on.

I liked Ted Chiang's take on it from a couple years ago initiative.humanities.princeton.edu/news/2025/in...
Everyone should think carefully about using generative AI simply because the technology is built on environmental destruction, labor exploitation, and IP theft. College students should think extra carefully about it because, even if those other issues were magically resolved, using generative AI is largely incompatible with the purpose of education. In the talk I gave, I said, “When you’re a student at a university, you should think of yourself as an athlete in training, and the job you’ll do after you graduate is the sport you will compete in. You don’t know specifically which sport you will play, and neither do your professors. What your professors do know is that strength training will help you. That’s what essay writing is; it’s strength training for the brain. Using ChatGPT to write your essays is like bringing a forklift into the weight room; you are never going to improve your cognitive fitness that way.” Let me expand on that. Building strength requires exertion; if anyone offers you an exercise program that involves no exertion at all, you know it’s not going to be effective. The improvements that come from doing cognitive exercise are not as rapid as those that come from physical exercise, but they are just as real. Writing an essay is hard because it forces you to use your brain in ways you haven’t before, and that is precisely why it’s useful. Your job is not to turn in completed assignments; it’s to learn how to think. Turning in completed assignments can help you learn how to think, but only if you’re the one who completed them.

I can only assume Paweł Pawlikowski's new movie Fatherland, starring Hanns Zischler as Thomas Mann and Sandra Hüller as his daughter, is a prequel to the father/daughter "mann" Hüller film Toni Erdmann. Can't wait!

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Ironside's character was originally just in the flashback/footage scene, but Cronenberg hadn't finished the script by the time shooting began, & he ended up writing more for Ironside, making him the main antagonist. Ironside still only got paid per day, but he was grateful it was his breakout role.

The first time I saw Scanners, it was at my local arthouse theater, & a few of us told an employee afterwards that some of the audio sync was off, & we were each given a coupon for a free ticket. We didn't know the audio was weird because Cronenberg had rewritten dialogue & so the ADR didn't match.

Miller and Vought are more fascist, but Hegseth may be the next most fascist after them. He's a vile monster, but thankfully his idiocy (like Trump's) cuts both ways - it's bad when he's supposed to be protecting us, but it's good when he's trying to violate our rights and laws.

Next chapter of Rusty Brown after volume 1 comes in Ware's new Acme Novelty Library next month, in case you don't know. It's the Alice White section. And there's some other stuff in the new Acme too.

Now through midnight, all tickets for this series and AFI Silver's silent film series are $12. (A pass for the two series together is $200, which is a great deal if you're seeing some or all of each series, but this is good if you can only make a few screenings.)

The sunflowers at the Philadelphia Museum of Art still has a good amount of yellow, & the teal in the background is a lovely compliment. I've seen that one in person & love it.

Michael Avolio - PCX table 17 @michaelavolio.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
With the sunflowers, that yellow has unfortunately also faded over time. So that also impacts how those look, depending on when the photos of them were taken. That seems like a subject he loved, though, so I'm not surprised he did so many variations of that. But the postman...! Haha

I just got a Van Gogh book recently & was stunned to see there are like four different similar versions of his painting of that postman. I've seen one in person (I think in Philly, or maybe DC) but didn't know he'd done a few others. It's not uncommon for an artist to do that, but it surprised me.

And the bits of reflection in the black kettle are the same shapes but have different brushstrokes - one version has those looser, the other sharper. So I do think it's two different paintings.

Michael Avolio - PCX table 17 @michaelavolio.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I don't think an artist would redo their signature if painting over an old painting, unless they had to paint over the signature when changing something else.

Two different versions. The mug nearest us has slightly different dimensions between the two paintings, for example. (Or at least they look different to me - one looks slightly taller.) The difference in colors could be the photos, but I think it's two different paintings.

We have to make people scared, disgusted, and uncomfortable to be involved w/ the making and distribution of this type of agitprop fanfic by fascists like Shapiro and the DW. The shit they're churning out is incitement, much like Birth of a Nation was incitement against PoCs a hundred years ago

That 2020 Shadow Kingdom project was subtitled something like "The Early Songs of Bob Dylan" and included a song from 1989's Oh Mercy, which was by then from the first half of his career.

Bob Dylan's album Time Out of Mind was released 29 years ago. The album was seen as a late career comeback for Dylan when it came out, so it's wild it's now technically mid-career for him. But in about six years, it'll be the halfway point of his recording career.
