for creating good matplotlib plots, AI/Claude REALLY shines. the amount of fine-tuning I am able to do without looking up the 20 year old APIs that sometimes (not always) are counter-intuitive or just "aged"... it's cool how good looking products one can achieve in less time!

i have a standing rule for claude that helps me a lot to stay cleaner with this. as soon as a script idea is usable by others it will enter the code into a fitting library.

i'll write a blog post, thanks for the interest. a good decider constraint i found is: when a script needs to be imported by another script, the 1st script becomes library code with tests.

One thing that becomes clear to me trying to do science with an LLM: you absolutely have to force it to produce library code with tests and reuse it from the beginning! When you allow to create quick scripts there’s no guarantee that the physics are implemented the same way in the next script.

One of most annoying things I find since being back in Germany is being pressured to pay for a toilet visit in a shopping mall. The mall wants my money, it can make my visit comfortable by sorting this out themselves.

Music lovers: there are 2 versions of Shirley Bassey’s Goldfinger out there. On the soundtrack she moves more steady to the beat, which I find supports the heavy accompany well. But there’s also another radio or studio version where she keeps slowing down and accelerating, not liking it. What u say?

Flight attendants have the right to organize a union without intimidation or interference. I've received reports that Delta threatened pay and benefits, and encouraged new workers to report colleagues for even mentioning a union. I'm pushing back against union-busting tactics.

I have released 0.12.0 of my isistools that contained a bug fixed version of csm2map, a faster, pure python version of cam2map. Its faster because it tries to do all in RAM, that works up to CTX size with laptop memory, for HiRISE I’m still testing how it can do it partially out of memory.

PROJ ships planetary CRS under a versioned authority, IAU_2015. Write one to a GeoTIFF or GeoPackage, read it back, and most of the stack can't tell you what it is any more. Four round-trips, minimal reproducers. One works. michaelaye.github.io/posts/iau-cr...

An indirect confirmation of the separation has arrived: Using a tiny change of radio communication frequencies caused by the presumed separation event! Now we are waiting for telemetry. (I'm excited specifically b/c I recently became a Co-I for the BeLA instrument, the laser altimeter).

That's the first time that I am happy with my processed image of an observation of Neptune by Hubble, so I am sharing it here too! 🔭 This observation was done yesterday around 6pm UTC. The data come from the 17964 proposal led by Mariarosa Marinelli.
A picture of Neptune as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. The planet appears in dark blue, with some storms near the poles and the equator looking like white spots and streaks.

maybe it's going toward the other extrem, but i once set up a rule to always show with data instead of recalling from memory. Now when i just asked: "is gdalinfo reporting rows/cols or cols/rows"?, instead of coming up with an answer from memory, it tested it with a small gdal_create CLI run. :)

You can add that as a coding rule to Claude, even down to your preferred libraries. Like “always check astropy first before creating your own utlilities”.

There absolutely is no doubt that the climate crisis has been caused by humans and our pumping of green house gasses and pollutants in to the Earth's atmosphere since the industrial revolution and growing effectively exponentially ever since.

What angers me the most as a planetary scientist about the world blowing through the 1.5 deg C threshold is that we know how to stop this. The broad strokes physics/processes here are straightforward enough that the runaway greenhouse Earth and snowball Earth was a homework assignment in grad school
