I was doing my usual 7mi forest trail run on Sunday when I spotted this for the first time (no idea how long it had been there??) I'd been finding the little leaf faces for years, but this was a new one. Magical forest artist, I see you and I'm a big fan of your work.

A face has been made out of an old stump by someone drawing pupils onto two rocks and wedging them into "sockets" in the rotting wood. Some sticks below look like a mouth, and the greenery growing out the top looks like crazy hair.

A little face has been cut into a brown leaf. Complete with eyes, eyebrows, a smiling mouth, and a twig sticking out of the nose hole (possibly holding it upright against a stump?)

Reclining on a low broken branch, a woman in white diaphanous gown rests against a tree trunk. Lost in contemplation, her eyes are pressed closed. Her hair falls in tight waves of blonde down her back, and a lavender sash crosses her waist from behind. Tacked to the trunk above her, a red glass heart hangs from a ribbon. The forest beyond is partially obscured by branches of a conifer. Soft light cuts diagonals through the misty air. The tree squats on a grassy island. At its front edge, an open vessel half filled with water contains a solitary flame. A branch crosses in front of the tripod stand it sits upon. Oh hi. It's my birthday 🙂 I have to say that diving into acrylic painting and book illustration over these last few years has been incredibly rewarding, and I enjoy learning more, painting more, and getting older really is quite great!

DRAGONFLIGHT (1978)  Acrylic on Masonite - 20" X 30"   For the 1st book in Anne McCaffrey's legendary Dragonriders of Pern series, I wanted to create a literal visualization of the title. I selected an aerial POV and tilted the horizon to simulate the dizzying sensation of flight. #art #booksky 🪐📚
